Rudy, 88 MARCH 19, 1916-JAN. 6, 2005 MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Mrs. Helen Harshman Rudy, 88, of Middletown, and a current resident of Buckingham's Choice in Adamstown, Md., died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005. She was the wife of the late Richard Baxter Rudy, who died on Aug. 15, 1990. They were married for 53 years. Born in Ellerton, Md., on March 19, 1916, she was a daughter of the late Clyde C. and Nellie Johnson Harshman. Mrs. Harshman was an active member of Evangelical Lutheran Church in Frederick, Md., where she was a member of Golden Rule Sunday School class and served on numerous committees through the years. During her younger years, she also was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Middletown, where she participated in LCW group activities and other functions within the church. Her family and their activities were an essential part of Mrs. Rudy's life. She enjoyed parties, picnics and gatherings with friends and family, which included relatives of all ages. She had an interest in all of their lives. Mrs. Rudy loved flowers and gardening. She was especially interested in raising orchids and tropical flowers, which thrived under her care. As an active partner with her husband, she was instrumental in the establishment and development of their company, Richard B. Rudy Inc., a successful transportation business that is still in operation in Frederick. She had a love for travel that took her on many trips to destinations in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Europe. She especially enjoyed a trip to Holland during the Tulip Festival. Mrs. Rudy was a member of Carrollton Manor DAR, Rose Hill Garden Club, Frederick Travel Club, Catoctin Club, Cedarettes and AARP. She participated in various Masonic, Tall Cedar and Lions Club activities with her husband during his lifetime. Surviving family members are her four children, Kenneth W. Rudy and wife, Carol, of Frederick, and Richard A. Rudy and wife, Janet, Gary C. Rudy and wife, Hope, and Jeannette R. Brust and husband, Herman, all of Middletown; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Madeline Boone of Frederick. She also is survived by a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Rudy was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Elizabeth Rudy, and a brother, Marion Harshman. Friends may call at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick, on Sunday, Jan. 9 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., where funeral services will be held on Monday, Jan. 10 at 10 a.m. The Rev. Dr. W. Philip Fogarty will officiate. Interment will be in Middletown Lutheran Cemetery, Middletown. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Jason, Mathew, Troy, Joel and Travis Rudy, and Phil Shafer.
