Description	:	Centenarian, Helen Berniece (Brown) Vanosdall, of Grand Island died Tuesday, June 7, 2011, at Golden Living Center, Lakeview, Grand Island, NE. Helen was born, July 6, 1910, at Mariaville, Rock County, NE. to James P. and Alice (Scott) Brown. Helen was preceded in death by: husband, Theo Vanosdall, in 1983, and stepsons, John, Leroy and Edward Vanosdall and stepdaughters, Marie Lassen, Leah McKercher and Pattye Christiansen. Survivors are: stepsons and stepdaughter-in-law, Glen and Betty Vanosdall and Wayne Vanosdall, all of Grand Island, NE.; David Vanosdall of Hastings, NE. and a host of relatives and friends. Helen was born, July 6, 1910, at Mariaville, Rock County, NE. to James P. and Alice (Scott) Brown. Helen was preceded in death by: husband, Theo Vanosdall, in 1983, and stepsons, John, Leroy and Edward Vanosdall and stepdaughters, Marie Lassen, Leah McKercher and Pattye Christiansen. Survivors are: stepsons and stepdaughter-in-law, Glen and Betty Vanosdall and Wayne Vanosdall, all of Grand Island, NE.; David Vanosdall of Hastings, NE. and a host of relatives and friends. Helen received her education at Mariaville (NE.) School. For many years, Helen worked as a hired girl for other people. When her mother had a stroke in 1940, Helen took care of her and helped her father farm. During the 1940s, they traveled extensively and spent the winters in Texas and California. A niece recalls Helen's love of silk stockings. She had four boxes of them at the time World War II began, later then became very hard to obtain. She always wore gloves to put stockings on so she would not snag them. She used strands of her own hair and a very fine needle to mend the runs. Helen's father, James entered the Veterans Hospital at Grand Island, NE. and Helen found work in Grand Island, NE. where she met Theodore "Theo" Vanosdall, a widower with several children. The couple were united in marriage June 5, 1952, at the age of 42 and made their home in Grand Island, NE. They both loved to travel and did much of it while their health permitted. They were married for 31 years. Theo's children always called Helen "Mom" and their children called her grandma. She was loved by all. Helen continued to reside in their home after Theo's death in 1983. Age and failing eyesight forced her to enter an Assisted Living Home in Grand Island, NE.
