Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 28 at Hartquist Funeral Home, Pipestone. Honorary casket bearers were Jennifer, Jody and Julie Heffele, Misty Adams and Mandy Tanner. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 28 at Hartquist Funeral Home, Pipestone. Honorary casket bearers were Jennifer, Jody and Julie Heffele, Misty Adams and Mandy Tanner. Helen Ray was born to Melvin and Esther (Ofstad) Bute on June 24, 1927 in Miller, S.D., where she was raised and received her education. After graduation from Miller High School in 1945, she attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D. and graduated with a degree in Home Economics Education in 1949. She married F. Gordon Ray on Sept. 15, 1948 in Miller. In 1998 they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. In 1950, Helen taught home economics in Hudson, S.D. for one year. Gordon and Helen ranched near Highmore, S.D. for 13 years. In 1964 they purchased a feed business in Elkton, S.D. They owned and operated this business until 1970 when they moved to Pipestone. Helen was Extension Home Economist for Pipestone County from 1970 until 1975 when she began teaching at the Pipestone Area Vocational Technical Institute. She continued in this capacity until her retirement. Gordon preceded her in death on Nov. 23, 1999. In June 2003, she moved to an apartment in Sioux Falls to be near her daughter. In September 2003, she entered the Sioux Valley Foundation Hospice Cottage in Sioux Falls. She was a PEO sister for over 50 years. For many years she was a Sunday School teacher. She is survived by her four children, Lee Ann (Bradley) Heffele, Wasilla, Alaska; Rick (Lynette) Ray, Montevideo; Gary (Annette) Ray, Pierre, S.D. and Sue Caldwell, Sioux Falls; 12 grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; one brother, Robert Bute and two sisters, Florence Henson and Lois Rauenscroft. (Hartquist Funeral Home, Pipestone Chapel)
