Norton died at her home in this city at a little after 6 o'clock Monday morning, December 23. Although her health had been poor for ten years and her condition since the first of last September serious, the end came so suddenly as to shock the community. She had seemed to be improving of late and during the last few days before her death had appeared particularly cheerful. She sat up with her family until late Sunday night and retired without making any special complaint. Early the next morning she called her daughter, Miss Flora, to assist her in rising. She was helped to a chair and was scarcely seated before she collapsed. Heart trouble was the cause of her death. The funeral was held from the family home Christmas morning at 10 o'clock, Rev. J. N. Funk of the Baptist church officiating. Helen E. Ross was born September 23, 1835 in Eden, Erie county, N. Y., being exactly 66 years and 3 months old on the day of her death. She was married in November 1860 to Z. J. Norton at Fredonia, N. Y., and moved with him to Buffalo, where they resided until 1884. They then came to Nebraska, settling first near St. Paul and moving later to a farm on the Cottonwood in Nance County. After living there for about five years the family returned to St. Paul where they have since made their home. Mrs. Norton was the mother of five children, all of whom with a sorrowing husband survive her. They are Misses Kate and Flora Norton and Clayton J. Norton of this city, Mrs. F. D. Brown of Miller, Clyde W. Norton of Omaha and Clifford H. Norton of Salida, Colo. Mrs. Norton was for many years a member of the Baptist church. She was a noble Christian woman, a faithful wife, a loving mother and a kind neighbor. Her death is mourned by the entire community. ~~~~~~ From The St. Paul Phonograph, December 27, 1901, page 5, transcribed by Linda Berney: Death of Mrs. Norton The early hours of Monday, December 23, marked the close of the earthly career of a noble and useful life. Mrs. Helen E. Norton, wife of Judge Z. J. Norton, died after a long struggle with sickness, surrounded by her loving family, aged 66 years, 8 months. Thought the life of the deceased was not expected to last for any long period, at the time of death she and her family had looked forward to her participation in the family Christmas observance. But the final summons came quickly, as it always does in heart disease. During the last two or three years, Mrs. Norton has been a sufferer from that malady, and in September her condition was so serious that the absent children gathered around her sickbed and remained until the danger was passed. Helen E. Ross was born September 28, 1835 at Eden, Erie county, N. Y. November 26, 1860, she married Z. J. Norton at Fredonia. In the summer 1884 the family moved from Buffalo to this city where they have since lived. Three sons and three daughters - all living were born to them: Clyde, Clifford, and Clayton, and Mrs. Frank Brown of Miller, Nebr., Misses Kate and Flora. Deceased was an exemplary wife and mother and a splendid Christian character. She was a faithful churchworker, having been identified with the Baptist denomination since its organization. She was at her death president of the local W.C.T.U. The remains were interred in the St. Paul cemetery Christmas morning, services being held at the home by the deceased's pastor, Rev. Funk. The full sympathy of the community is with the bereaved aged husband and family.
