Description	:	Funeral services for Mrs. Helen Kate McMurphy, 80, were held at 10:30 this (Thursday) morning in the Klawitter chapel (sic) at Nelson. Mrs. McMurphy had been in failing health since she suffered a cerebral hemmorhage in February. Rev. Lincoln Justice of the Methodist church (sic) had charge of the services here. Helen Kate McMurphy, daughter of John W.and Lucinda Furness, was born January 1, 1879, in St. Lawrence County, New York. She passed from this life May 4, 1959, at the home of her daughter in Nelson, Nebraska, at the age of 80 years, 4 months, and 3 days. She came west with her parents in the early 1880's and settled in Cedar County, Nebr., where she grew to young womanhood. She was baptized and became a member of the Christian Church in Magnet, Nebr., in 1897. She was an ardent believer in education and worked until she obtained her teaching certificate and then taught for several years in rural schools in Cedar county (sic). She was united in marriage to Jasper M. McMurphy on April 3, 1904. They resided on a farm in Cedar county (sic) where their three children were born. In 1919 the family retired and moved to Wayne, Nebr., where their children received most of their education. Wayne was her home until the death of her husband on January 2, 1943, when she came to Nelson and made her home with her daughter, Margaret, and assisted in the caring for her granddaughter, Sandra. She was with her daughter, Bernice, in Douglas, Wyoming, when she became ill on February 7, 1959. She was brought back to Nelson and cared for in her home until the time of her death. She leaves to mourn her death her three children, John L. McMurphy of Pittsfield, Mass., Mrs. Bernice Prator of Douglas, Wyo., and Mrs. Margaret Klawitter of Nelson; two grandchildren, Dorothy McMurphy, a student at Albany Medical College, and Sandra Klawitter, a student at Nebraska Wesleyan University; three sisters, Mrs. L.S. Jorgensen, Lincoln, Mrs. Emma Stober, Winner, S.D., and Mrs. Mattie Fenske, Yankton, S.D., many nieces and nephews and many friends. The Nelson Gazette, Thursday, May 7, 1959
