Helen was born Aug. 10, 1931, in Cherokee, to Reginald and Ellar (Drake) Martin. She graduated from Cherokee Wilson High School in 1950. Just out of high school she went to work for Cherokee Clinic. Helen was born Aug. 10, 1931, in Cherokee, to Reginald and Ellar (Drake) Martin. She graduated from Cherokee Wilson High School in 1950. Just out of high school she went to work for Cherokee Clinic. She married Harold R. Dittmer on May 22, 1955, at Central Church of Christ in Cherokee. She farmed with her husband for several years. She had also worked for Vine's Café in Cushing and Eastwood Schools in the kitchen, retiring after 22 years of service. She was a resident of Cherokee the past 10 years. Previously, she lived in Cushing from 1963 until 2004, and prior to that on a farm in rural Holstein, Iowa, for eight years. While in Cushing, she was a member of St. John Lutheran Church. After moving to Cherokee, she moved her membership to First Church of Christ. Helen belonged to Bible Buddies at First Church of Christ. She enjoyed cooking, reading, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, and taking long walks with her friend and neighbor, Mavis Smith. She was a gifted cake maker. Survivors include her four children, Dixie Meyer of Denton, Texas, Donald Dittmer of Omaha, Neb., Bruce (Sandy) Dittmer of Nevada, Iowa, and Barry (Brenda) Dittmer of Hinton, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a step-great-grandchild; her sister, Betty Martin of Cherokee; three sisters-in-law, Phyllis Martin of Cherokee, Gerry Martin of Windsor, Va., and Carol Wolf of Waynesboro, Va.; a brother-in-law, Loren (Audrey) Dittmer of Holstein; several nieces and nephews; and her beloved dog Casper, who was a great companion to her the last few years. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold in February 2003; and two brothers, Harold "Sonny" and Jim Martin.
