Born on March 16, 1911, in Middletown, she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Edith Biser Rudy. Mrs. Chandler graduated from Middletown High School in 1927 and Towson Normal School in 1929 earning a degree in education and beginning her lifelong commitment to and interest in education. Read More	Mrs. Helen Rudy Chandler, 96, of Middletown, recently residing at Homewood at Crumland Farm, died on November 20, 2007, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. Born on March 16, 1911, in Middletown, she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Edith Biser Rudy. Mrs. Chandler graduated from Middletown High School in 1927 and Towson Normal School in 1929 earning a degree in education and beginning her lifelong commitment to and interest in education. She received a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland in 1941. Mrs. Chandler began her teaching career at the one-room Hopewell School near Union Bridge in 1930. She moved to the Middletown Elementary School in the fall of 1930, and remained at the school until 1948, serving as its principal from 1943 to 1948. Mrs. Chandler moved to Frederick in 1948 and taught English and history to 8th grade students at the Elm Street Junior High School from 1948 to 1957. She transferred to the newly constructed West Frederick Junior High School in 1957 and remained there until her retirement from the classroom in 1965, after 36 years. Mrs. Chandler was a lifetime member of the Christ Reformed Church in Middletown. She was also a member of the Frederick County Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional honor society for women educators and the Retired Teachers of Frederick County. She also belonged to the Citizens Auxiliary and was a charter member of the Middletown Historical Society. Mrs. Chandler enjoyed keeping up with the hundreds of students she taught during her long career in the classroom. A trip to the mall or a visit to a local restaurant was almost always marked by meeting a former student and catching up with what happened since she saw them last. She developed an abiding interest in history that lead her to learn about and appreciate American and English antiques. She was particularly interested in furniture and other antiques made in Frederick County, and loved to attend antique shows and sales to try to spot a special piece. She shared her interest in antiques and genealogy with her family, introducing them to the hobby and sharing the wealth of knowledge and information she had acquired. Mrs. Chandler also enjoyed playing bridge, and participated in numerous bridge clubs, including one that extended for 50 years. She is survived by a nephew and his wife, John and Judy Rudy of Beaver Creek; a niece and her husband, Faye and Ronald Moss, of Middletown; her niece, Deborah Rudy of College Park; a great-nephew, Rudy Moss, of London, England, and two great-nieces, Abby Moss of San Diego, Calif., and Michelle Taylor of Greencastle, Pa.; and a great-great-nephew, Jacob Bell and a great-great-niece, Rachel Bell. She was predeceased by her husband, Marvin J. Chandler, and siblings Lenora R. Morgan, Arthur "Jake" Rudy, and Cyrus "Mike" Rudy. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Sat. Nov. 24 from the Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St. Middletown.-- Rev. Mark A. Wakefield, her pastor will officiate. Interment will be made in Christ Reformed Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday one hour prior to funeral services.
