Description	:	Defiance Crescent-News Helen M. Hornish, 89, Defiance, died at 6:10 p.m. Saturday, May 13, 2006, in Laurels of Defiance. She was born Nov. 8, 1916, in Defiance County, the daughter of Joseph and Mae (Brown) Lero. In 1936, she married Virgil Hornish, who died in 1967. She was a homemaker, a small business owner and a member of Defiance College Women's Commission, Poplar Ridge Church of the Brethren, its ABC class and Women's Work. She was born Nov. 8, 1916, in Defiance County, the daughter of Joseph and Mae (Brown) Lero. In 1936, she married Virgil Hornish, who died in 1967. She was a homemaker, a small business owner and a member of Defiance College Women's Commission, Poplar Ridge Church of the Brethren, its ABC class and Women's Work. She also held numerous offices in the church. Surviving are two sons, Samuel Sr. (Jo Ellen) and Timothy (Deborah) of Defiance; four daughters, Mrs. Donald (Nancy) Veir of Brentwood, Calif., Mrs. Donald (Mary) Shisler of Littleton, Colo., Mrs. John (Linda) Briggs of Battle Creek, Mich., and Holly Peters, Defiance; two sisters, Anna Margaret Fillinger and Rosemary Lero of Defiance; and 15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Also preceding her in death were a son, Ted, in infancy; a sister, Dorothy Hancock; and a grandchild, in infancy. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Poplar Ridge Church of the Brethren, rural Defiance, with Revs. John Mummert and Glen Whisler officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday in Mast-Mock-Hoffman Funeral Home and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church. Preferred memorials are to the church or Hospice the Caring Way of Defiance.
