Hansen, the daughter of Ralph L. and Ida Cozine Herbert, was born on her parents' farm in Leroy Township, Audubon County, Iowa, and died at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 86 years and 13 days. She was baptized and confirmed at the First United Methodist Church in Audubon. She attended rural schools in Audubon County and graduated from the Audubon High School Class of 1927. Helen taught rural schools, the Gates School in Oakfield Township and the Wahlert School in Greeley Township for a short time. On May 25, 1929, she was united in marriage to Peter C. Hansen in Atlantic, Iowa. They farmed east of Hamlin until they retired in 1953 and moved into Audubon. Peter died November 26, 1958. Helen maintained her home, enjoyed traveling and was active in the community. She became a resident of the Friendship Home on March 8, 1988. She was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church. She held several offices, served on the church board, including the building committee of the new church, the finance committee, pastoral relations, and treasurer of the United Methodist Women. Helen was Audubon's first woman member of the City Council, elected in 1966 and served two terms. She was past chairman of the Audubon County Hospital Auxiliary, held several offices of the American Legion Auxiliary, Friendship Home Auxiliary, Audubon Garden Club, Meals on Wheels, Good Neighbor Center, Historical Society, Rebekah Lodge, and the Blood Bank. Helen enjoyed crocheting, doing craft work, sewing quilts and doll clothes, and participated in several card groups and bingo. Preceding her in death in addition to her husband were her parents; an infant sister, Jean Herbert; and her brother and sister-in-law, Russell C. and Mary Herbert. Survivors include her sisters-in-law: Versa Hansen of Atlantic, IA; Bessie Hansen of Maryville, MO; and Arlene Christensen of Audubon; nieces, nephews, cousins; other relatives and many friends. Clergy Officiating were Dr. Emmanuel Tabelisma and Reverend Harvey G. Quandt. Casket Bearers were Betsy Carter, Jim Grabill, Kent Grabill, Scott Hansen, Steven Hansen, Brad Peppers, Jeff Peppers, Laurie Peppers, Julie Rasmussen, Tim Wellendorf, Tracey Wellendorf, and Rob Wellendorf.
