Johnston, 85, a lifelong Leesburg resident who retired as principal of Herndon Elementary School, died Nov. 29 at Heritage Hall Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Leesburg. Mrs. Johnston was born Feb. 7, 1921, in Virginia to the late Charles B. and Cecile Matthews. She graduated from Madison College in 1941 and received a master's degree from George Washington University. She was a volunteer at Loudoun Mental Health and a tutor at the Leesburg jail. Johnston, 85, a lifelong Leesburg resident who retired as principal of Herndon Elementary School, died Nov. 29 at Heritage Hall Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Leesburg. Mrs. Johnston was born Feb. 7, 1921, in Virginia to the late Charles B. and Cecile Matthews. She graduated from Madison College in 1941 and received a master's degree from George Washington University. She was a volunteer at Loudoun Mental Health and a tutor at the Leesburg jail. She worked for the FBI in the 1940s, and then was secretary to the president of People's National Bank in Leesburg. In 1951, she opened Mrs. Johnston's School, a private school for kindergarten through second grade. She worked at the National Children's Rehabilitation Center in Leesburg from 1957 to 1964. She was assistant principal at Herndon Elementary from 1966 to 1980, and principal until 1982. Her husband, John Allen Johnston, preceded her in death. Survivors include two sons, Allan Johnston of Arlington, and Charles Johnston of Manassas; and three grandchildren. Mrs. Johnston was buried Tuesday in Union Cemetery in Leesburg.
