Description	:	Helen Maude George, 84, of Janesville, Iowa, died January 2nd, 2013, at Waverly Hospital, Waverly, Iowa, of heart failure. Helen was born November 20th, 1928, to Floyd Edwin Johnston and Harriet "Isabelle" Smalling Johnston in Janesville, Iowa. The day after graduating from Montevideo High School, Minnesota, in May of 1946, she moved with her family to Janesville where she quickly met a handsome young Marine at church choir. She married A. Read More	Helen Maude George, 84, of Janesville, Iowa, died January 2nd, 2013, at Waverly Hospital, Waverly, Iowa, of heart failure. Helen was born November 20th, 1928, to Floyd Edwin Johnston and Harriet "Isabelle" Smalling Johnston in Janesville, Iowa. The day after graduating from Montevideo High School, Minnesota, in May of 1946, she moved with her family to Janesville where she quickly met a handsome young Marine at church choir. She married A. Neal George on January 1st, 1947, and they lived on the family Century Farm in rural Janesville, for most of the 65+ years together. She was a farm wife, active in many local choral groups, an active member of the Janesville American Legion Auxiliary holding many local and county offices, volunteered at the Iowa Vets Home in Marshalltown for many years, and was an active member of the Janesville UMC for over 66 years. She and Neal sang in the church choir all those years, and together sang many duets for churches and funerals all over the area. She was a 4-H leader, serviced on the local election boards, many church committees, and other local community organizations. In 1992 Helen and Neal became some of the first NOMADS, a Methodist service organization, traveling all over the country in their RV doing all types of volunteer work including reconstruction of homes from Hurricanes, repair of church and college buildings, and many other mission services. They moved to the "Sandbox Neighborhood" in Janesville in 2009. Helen was an avid crafter in her lifetime, enjoying and teaching caning, stained glass work, woodworking, knitting, and other projects. Helen is survived by her daughter Carol (Gene) Anhalt of Waverly, Iowa, two sons Ken (Christine) George of Liberty, Mo, David (Mary) George of Bemidji, MN, and son-in-law Greg Henley of Garner, Iowa, 12 grandchildren Clement George, Melissa Humphrey, Adam George, Ryan George, Tyler George, Jeremy Anhalt, Paul Anhalt, Sara Shearer, Terence Henley, Patrick Henley Dennis Mabb and Christian Hooper; 7 great grandchildren, Maddox Humphrey, Cecelia Humphrey, Avi Humphrey, McKenna George, Will George, Clara George, Emma Anhalt, Adam Anhalt; and 7 step great grandchildren, Brendan, Taylor and Keenan Humphrey, Elizabeth Fadness, Cassandra Langhout, and Charles Bennett, and a sister Mary Beth Kourey of Clive, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband, her daughter Marie (Greg) Henley, her parents, her sisters Florence Conrow, Dorothy Hites, Ruth Dewey, and Brothers Melvin, Carl and Ray Johnston, and great granddaughter Audrey Anhalt. Memorial Services will be held Saturday, January 5, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at the Janesville United Methodist Church with Pastor Mary Schnepf and Rev. CJ Latham officiating. Burial of the cremains will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the Oakland Cemetery. Friends and Family are invited to a gathering at Court Chapel at the Janesville UMC from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, January 4th.
