Spear and Sarah Ellen (More or Moor) Spear,was born near Detroit, Michigan January 15, 1857 and died at her old home place, now the home of her son, Oscar Gideon near Emmett, Kansas July 15, 1936. When she was a child her parents moved to St. Clere, Kansas where she met and married Thomas H. Gideon on June 4, 1979. There were ten cheldren, two of whom died in infancy and one daughter Allie U. When she was a child her parents moved to St. Clere, Kansas where she met and married Thomas H. Gideon on June 4, 1979. There were ten cheldren, two of whom died in infancy and one daughter Allie U. Gideon, died in 1908. The living children are Mrs. May Segrest of Manhattan, Kansas, Mora E. and Oscar Gideon of Emmett, Kansas. Mrs. Myrtle Riederer of Holton, Kansas, Mrs Elizabeth Wels of Salina, Kansas Lloyd H. Gideon and Mrs. Maude Woodworth both of Topeka, Kansas. There are fifteen grandchildren, also two brothers George Spear of Moline and Royal Spear of Wichita, Kansas. Her husband, Thomas Gideon died in 1930. Mrs Gideon was a faithful and loving wife and mother, devoting her life as long as she was able to their happiness and welfare. She has been an invalid for several years. She became a member of the United Brethren Church at Mt. Olive in 1902 and ever remained in that faith. Mr. and Mrs. Gideon were pioneers of weatern Jackson county, always interested and willing to help in the betterment of the community and county and much credit is due them of the advancement of their community. They moved to Holton, Kansas in 1909 which remained their residence but their interests were mainly in and about their old home in Adrian township. The funeral was conducted last Friday at Mount Olive Church and the burial was there. Rev. Mayfield of soldier, Kansas was the minster in charge. Singers were Miss Christina Stoll and Mrs. Ernes Hochull, accompanied by Miss Emma Zibel, all of Holton. The casket bears were M.A. Bender, Will Beightel, Rainhardt Schultz, Carl Siegel, John Patterson and August Van DeVelde.
