Griswold, Esq., and Mrs. --Griswold, of Jefferson township, Lee county, Iowa) departed this life at Ottumwa, Iowa, on the 5th day of May, 1884; aged 31 years 5 months and 3 days. Her remains were brought in Montrose for interment, and her funeral took place from St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, on Thursday, 8th inst. and was attended by the husband of the deceased, her brothers George Griswold (of Ottumwa) and James and Henry (of this county) and their families, her sister Mrs. Miller and husband (of Ottumwa), her sister Mrs. Moon (of Jefferson township) and other relatives and a large concourse of sympathizing friends. The very solemn and impressive service of the American church, for the burial of the dead, was read by Rev. Walter Tearne, Rector, to the end of the lesson, when Hymn No. 150 was sung by the choir, composed of Misses Mamie Ward, Sadie Anderson and Mary singer. Then followed a celebration of Holy communion, partaken by the relatives and friends of the deceased. How fitting and how striking is this solemn requiem, this ancient custom of the Holy Catholic Church; and how it impresses upon us a realizing sense of our believ in "the communion of saints," that is to say, in the reality of a sweet and holy communion between the saints of the church militant, and the saints of the church triumphant, whereby we have access to actural divine presence and wherein we have assurance that "Blessed are th dead who died in the Lord," The burial service was continued and concluded at the grave and the final benediction of dismiss pronounced. We were gratified to note on this occasion the ommission of some of the funeral customs of this age, that to our mind are more honored in the breach than in the observance, that is, the entire absence of anything intended of calculated to harrow up the feelings of open afresh the wounds of the breaved and nearly heart-broken mourners. We particularly commend the omission of the sermon and the immediate withdrawal of the mourners and relatives from the scene of burial as soon as the benediction is pronounced. Mrs. Nellie Pennington was a lady possessed of most excellent qualities, with a mind of great sensibility and quick perception, thoughtful, amiable and complaince as wife, mother, sister, daughter and friend, and in every relation in life, she gained the hearts and good will of all with whom she was associated . She was for several years a communicant of this church and was ...news for over a year ...consumption with ---calm resignation to divine will and fully prepared for the great change,. He passed away, rejoicing in the hope of a blessed immortality beyond this present life of suffering of tears.
