Daughter of George Winslow and Blanche Edna Young OBITUARY THE CHARITON HERALD-PATRIOT Chariton, Iowa Thursday, December 20, 2001 HELEN SHEETS Helen Sarah Winslow, daughter of George W. and Blanche Young Winslow, was born Feb. 11, 1906, in Derby, Iowa, and passed away Dec. 12, 2001, at the Corydon Nursing and Rehab Center in Corydon, Iowa. Helen graduated from Derby High School, then attended Simpson College. She grew up helping her parents in the Winslow Bros. General Store. Later, she took that experience to Chariton, working at the Montgomery Ward store. On Oct. 23, 1929, Helen married Mardis Virgil Sheets at the Methodist parsonage in Chariton. The couple lived in Derby, working in partnership with Helen's father in the Derby store. In 1938, Helen and Mardis moved to Corydon, where they operated a small grocery store until 1943. The years 1943 through 1945 were years of military separation as Mardis served in the Army in World War II. From 1945 to 1978 they farmed in the New Zion neighborhood in Wayne County, In retirement, they made their home in Corydon. Helen grew up in the Derby Methodist Episcopal Church. She was a long-time member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #68 of Corydon and of the New Zion Neighborhood Club. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Mardis in 1983, her brother, Harry C. Winslow, sisters-in-law, Helen K. Winslow and Fay Dorsey; and brothers-in-law, Kenneth, Guy and Pearl Sheets. Helen is survived by nieces, Shirley Pratt and husband Robert of Needham, Mass. and Patricia Anton and husband Stan of Hawley, Penn., nephew, Roger Winslow and wife Jan of Corydon, sister-in-law Irma Winslow of Allerton, cousin Kathryn Mosier of Des Moines, several great-nieces and nephews and other relatives. Services were held at the Randolph Funeral Home in Corydon Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001 with Rev. Jim Riley officiating. Musical selections "Be Still My Soul" and "Abide With Me" were provided by soloist Georgia Runyon and organist Marilyn Jackson. Interment was in the Derby Cemetery. Bearers were great nieces and nephews Laura Bertelson, Chris Bertelson, Mairi Winslow, John Epperson, Mark Winslow and Carol Kyser.
