Helen married first to Harold Moses Brown on 5 October 1940 at Essex Junction. They made their home at Rutland, Vermont and Burlington where her husband was part owner and operator of H. M. Brown Lumber and Grain Company and later a state senator. He died in 1965 and Helen married next to Finley Jay Shepard on 25 December 1968 at Castleton where they made their home. She was admitted to Birchwood Terrace Healthcare at Burlington in 1997 with declining health due to Alzheimer's. Helen and her first husband, Harold, were the parents of two children, Harry Martin Brown and one daughter still living. Helen and her second husband, Finley, had no children. Sources- -2015, John More Association Directory -ancestry.com -JMA#2841211 CASTLETON Helen Vera Brown Shepard, 86, a resident of Birchwood Terrace Healthcare in Burlington and former longtime resident of Castleton, died Jan. 16, 2003, with Alzheimers disease. She was born June 16, 1916, in Rockingham, the daughter of William and Mamie (Lovell) Workman. She graduated from the University of Vermont in 1937. She married Harold Brown on Oct. 5, 1940, in Essex Junction and they made their home in Castleton. He died in 1965. She married Finley Shepard in December 1968; he died in 1970. Mrs. Shepard taught in the Richmond elementary schools for two years before being named a state demonstration teacher at Castleton Normal School. She was involved in civic and community works, reviving Castleton Colonial Day in 1947 and taking part in it for 55 years, and serving on the Castleton Library Board for 48 years. She was a member of the Federated Church and Castleton Historical Society, was appointed by the governor to the Vermont Board of Education in the 1960s, served as president of the Castleton Womans Club, the Vermont Federation of Womens Clubs, and General Federation of Womens Clubs New England Conference, and as president of the Vermont Chapter of the American Association of University Women, and president of the Vermont Chapter of the American Automobile Association. She was also founding president of the Rutland County Audubon Society and president of the Vermont Audubon Council. She enjoyed books, cooking, birding and travel. Survivors include a daughter, Sarah Laughlin of Cambridge; a son, H. Martin Brown of Rutland; a brother, Robert Workman of Florida; four grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers, Bill, Chris and Dick. The memorial service will be held June 21 at 11 a.m. at the Federated Church in Castleton. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Castleton Womens Club for the Carriage Restoration Project, in care of Jane Hum, 229 Crystal Heights, Bomoseen, 05732.
