Description	:	JMA# 32631 Finley was a direct descendant of John and Betty More's Alexander line. He was the first of three children legally adopted by Finley Johnson Shepard and Helen Miller Gould Shepard. A newspaper article reported that he was found on the evening of 12 September 1914 on the steps of Saint Patrick's Cathedral in New York City and adopted about October 1915 by the Shepards. He was raised at Manhattan, New York where his father was a railroad executive and his mother was a prominent philanthropist. Finley married first to Ann Loraine Sheldon on 21 February 1933 at Yonkers, New York. They made their home first at Wallingford, Vermont where he was a landscape gardener. His wife died in 1946 and Finley married next to Ellen Ten Eyck Dines Kihn on 11 October 1947 at Brattleboro, Vermont. They, too, made their home at Wallingford where Finley was president of The Hardware Center. His wife died in 1965 and Finley married last to Helen Vera Workman Brown on 25 December 1968 at Castleton, Vermont at which time Finley relocated to this place. He died at Rutland Hospital after a short illness. He had founded Alcoholics Anonymous in Vermont, was a member of the Wallingford School Board, and active in many civic and service organizations. He was unsuccessful in a run for Congress in 1948 and unsuccessful in a run for the Senate in 1950. Finley and his first wife, Ann, were the parents of four children; Finley Sheldon Shepard, one daughter still living, and one son still living. Finley and his second wife, Ellen, were the parents of two children, a daughter and a son, both still living. Finley and his third wife, Helen, had no children.
