Heaton [Cumberland] Cumberland Times-News CUMBERLAND — Helen Wannetta Heaton, 83, of Cumberland, departed this life on Wednesday, June 6, 2012, to begin her eternal walk with her beloved Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Born April 25, 1929, in Cumberland, she was the eldest child of David "Elmer" Grapes and Evelyn Mae (McCrea) Grapes. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John B. "Jack" Heaton; her first husband, James E. Heaton [Cumberland] Cumberland Times-News CUMBERLAND — Helen Wannetta Heaton, 83, of Cumberland, departed this life on Wednesday, June 6, 2012, to begin her eternal walk with her beloved Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Born April 25, 1929, in Cumberland, she was the eldest child of David "Elmer" Grapes and Evelyn Mae (McCrea) Grapes. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John B. "Jack" Heaton; her first husband, James E. "Pete" Bierman Sr.; two brothers, Leslie Grapes and David "Sonny" Grapes; three sisters, Claire Crites, Dorothy Steinla, Eleanor Shelly, and one daughter-in-law, Deborah A. Bierman. Helen's greatest joy in life was her relationship with her Lord, and the knowledge that her children and later her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were also saved by His amazing grace. She was instrumental, along with her dear friend, Betty Ralston, through the work of the Holy Spirit, in bringing many people into the Kingdom. Helen came from a large family and the common thread of that family was the love for their Lord and their love for one another. Her smile, her gentle spirit, and her love for others will be missed. She truly believed that every act of kindness, no matter how small, was worth doing. There is an old Middle Eastern blessing that says, "When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. May you live your life so that when you die, the world will cry and you will rejoice." Helen is rejoicing! Surviving are her three children, James E. Bierman Jr. and wife Vickie, of LaVale, Ronald Lee "Dutch" Bierman and wife Vickie, of Oakland and Beverly Ann Nixon and husband Steven, of Mexico Farms; two sisters, Edna Lee Wilson, of Cumberland, and Patricia "Pat" Benson and husband Les, of Mexico Farms; one brother, Richard L. Grapes and wife Jackie, of Hagerstown; one brother-in-law, Robert E. Shelley, of Lanham; one sister-in-law, Donna (Grapes) Largent, of Cumberland; ten grandchildren, Ronald L. Bierman Jr., of LaVale, Steven Nixon Jr. and wife Lisa, of Canton, Ohio, Trina McGregor, of Cumberland, Karen Stafford and husband Keith, of Cumberland, Bruce C. Bierman and wife Valerie, of Frankfort, Ill., Stephanie Clise and husband Jason, of LaVale, Jennifer Hamilton and husband Chad, of Mexico Farms, Jennifer Marsh, of Harrisonburg, Va., Jason Bennett and wife Nicole, of Cumberland, and Jared Bennett and wife Nicki, of Ridgeley, W.Va.; sixteen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, (www.scarpellifh.com) on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral and committal services will be conducted in the Lighthouse of Hope Church on Friday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Timothy G. McGregor officiating. Friends will be received one hour prior the service at the church. Interment will be in Maryland State Veterans Cemetery, Rocky Gap, Flintstone. Serving as pallbearers will be Ronald Lee Bierman Jr., Steven P. Nixon Jr., Bruce C. Bierman, Jason Bennett, Jared Bennett and Chad Hamilton. The family would like to thank the staff at Allegany County Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the wonderful care given to our Mother, especially Deb Savage and the nursing staff of the third floor. In lieu of flowers, contributions made to the Alzheimer's Association, 108 Byte Drive, Suite 103, Frederick, MD 21702 would be appreciated.
