On last Thursday evening, November 20, 1919, at about six o'clock Mrs. Sebastian Geuder, nee Helena Barbara Woerlein, peacefully passed away at the home of her son, Louis Geuder, in this city, after a few days illness and at the age of 93 years. She had been in good health until Tuesday morning of last week when she suffered a paralytic stroke, from which she never recovered. Deceased was born at Rothenburg, Kingdom of Bavaria, Germany, on November 21, 1826. In the year 1848 she came to America, settling in the state of Pennsylvania, where she was united in marriage in the 1850 to Mr. Sebastian Geuder, who preceded her in death 20 years ago. In the year 1852 she came to Guttenberg, Iowa, with her husband, where she lived until the Angel of Death called her to the Great Beyond. Of late years she had been making her home with her son Louis and family, where she always received the best of care. Grandma Geuder was a true christian woman in every respect and was loved by all who knew her and in her death this city loses one of its most highly respected and oldest residents. She was a faithful member of St. John's Lutheran Church and a charter member of the Frauenverein. Doing kind acts for her family and friends was her greatest pleasure in life, which won her many friends. Her death is deeply mourned by three daughters, Mrs. Christina Beerman, of Guttenberg, Mrs. Maria Vanderham and Mrs. Lena Vanderham, of Ireton, Iowa, two sons, Henry and Louis Geuder, of Guttenberg, 48 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and a large number of other relatives and friends, by whom she will be sadly missed, as she was a kind and true mother and friends. Four children also preceded her in death, namely two daughters in infancy and two sons, Leonard and Ernst. Funeral services were held at St. John's Lutheran Church in this city on last Sunday afternoon, Rev. J. Jansig officiating. Interment was made in the City Cemetery. The funeral was very largely attended by relatives and friends from far and near.
