Read More	Obituary for Helena Weber Hulsebus (Harlan News March 31, 1938) Headline: Life Story of Mrs Peter Hulsebus Helena Kathrina Hulsebus (nee Weber) was born in Germany January 20 1851 and died March 22, 1938 at Harlan at the age of 87 years, 2 months and 3 days. She was married to Peter Hulsebus in 1873 and in July of the same year they came to America, settling in Decatur, Illinois where they lived for 11 years. In 1884 they moved to Shelby county, Iowa and settled on a farm 5 miles south of Defiance. Here she made her home until 2 years ago, when she went to live with her daughter Tillie Hulsebus Ahrenholtz (Henry), and various times visited the other children, who lived nearby. This winter she stayed with her daughter, Amanda in Harlan, at whose home she passed away. Her happy home was blessed with 11 children, 3 of whom died in infancy. The 8 who are mourning her death include: o Hanna Muller (Peter) of Harlan o Tillie Ahrenholtz (Henry) of Defiance o Kate Hartman (Johann) of Oelerick, South Dakota o Lydia Ahrenholtz (Arthur) of Defiance o Peter Jr Hulsebus (Floy) of Defiance o Rudolph Hulsebus (Ella) of Defiance o Alfred Hulsebus (Sarah) of Rushmore, Minnesota o Amanda Brewster (Glen) of Harlan There also remain 44 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren besides many other relatives and friends who mourn her death. The departed one was a real helpmate, who shared with her husband all the hardships of those early pioneer days. She was a mother in the truest sense of the word and her children call her blessed. In 1878 she, with her husband, joined the Evangelical church. Their home was always a shelter to those early pioneer preachers who followed the early settlers into the wilderness. She was a charter member of the Evangelical church in Defiance and a faithful worker for the Lord. She was ready and willing to depart being lonely among a younger generation. Funeral services were at the Evangelical church in Defiance., Rev A.K. Henning officiating, with internment in the Defiance cemetery.
