Description	:	Lena was the 2nd of 8 children born to Henry Schafer and his first wife, Amelia nee Kaiser. The Schafer's came to Saline County, Nebraska in about 1886 when Lena was a very little girl. Lena's mother died when Lena was only 10 years old; her father quickly remarried, in 1884, to Minnie Most. As the oldest girl, Lena would have had to be helper and substitute mother to her siblings, and to her five half-siblings who were born before Lena married. Lena and Fred had 9 children, all of whom grew to adulthood: Helen (1905-1997), who married Rudolph Henkel; Lydia (1907-2005), who married first Paul Butler and second Leo Pavelka; Caroline Berta (1909-1931), who married Rudolph Betz; Frederic (1910-1995), who married first Florence Schote and second Lenore Granneman; Gertrude (1912-2007), who married Jacob Reicher; Henry (1913-1979), who married first Rosalie Altman and second Berteal Bender Hatfield; Reuben (1916-1978), who married Norma Mason; Maxene (1921-2010), who married Donald Hermanson; and Barbara Ann (1927-2001), who did not marry. The following is another obituary, full in its content, published in "The Campbell News" on 7 Jan 1971, page 1: Last Rites For Mrs. Fred Endorf, 87 ------------ Mrs. Fred Endorf (Helena), daughter of Henry Schafer and his wife Amelia, nee Kaiser, was born October 4, 1883 at Glenview, Illinois. She was baptised in infancy and when at still a small child moved with her parents to Tobias, Nebraska, where she attended Zion Lutheran School and was in due time confirmed. On October 13, 1904, she was united in marriage to Fred W. Endorf. They lived in Burlington, Iowa for two years, then moved to Wilcox, Nebraska. In 1910, they came to Campbell. They were the parents of nine children. One daughter, Caroline, preceded her and her husband in death. She passed away December 30, 1970, reaching tho age of 87 years, 2 months and 26 days. She leaves to mourn her passing her five daughters, Helen (Mrs. Henkel) of Campbell, Lydia (Mrs. Butler) of Kearney, Gertrude (Mrs. Reicher) of Eureka, Calif., Maxine [sic-Maxene] (Mrs. Hermanson) of Lincoln, and Miss Barbara, also of Lincoln; three sons, Frederic of Treasure Island, FIa., Henry of Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Reuben of Grand Island; three daughters in-law, Dagmar (Mrs. Fred), Rosalie (Mrs. Henry), Norma (Mrs. Reuben); two sons-in-law, Dr. Jacob Reicher and Don Hermanson; 18 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren ; two sisters, Bertha (Mrs. Hahn) of Lincoln, Mathilda (Mrs. Wollenburg) of Plymouth; four half-brothers Fred Schafer, Louie and Leonard of Tobias, and Ernest of Corder, Mo.; three half-sisters, Emma (Mrs. Bartels) of Topeka, Kans., Hanna (Mrs. Bartels) of Tobias; and Elisabeth (Mrs. Loseke) of Columbus. A beautiful and gentle mother and a gracious and hospitable neighbor, she will be remembered by her family, neighbors and friends in her cheerfulness and her indomitable spirit in the face of illness. It is not death to close The eye long dimmed by tears And wake in glorious repose To spend eternal years. It is not death to fling Aside this sinful dust And rise on strong, exulting wing, To live among the just. Funeral services were held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Campbell on Saturday, January 2, with the Rev. Henry Pralle officiating. Music was by Mrs. Lyle Niemeyer, soloist, and Mrs. Glenn Henkel, organist . Pallbearers were Paul Endorf, Stuart Endorf, Glenn Henkel, Winston Henkel, Jeffry Hermanson and Calvin Henkel. Interment was in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. CampbeII Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
