The campaign was severely hampered, first by an outbreak of measles among the troops, and then by unseasonably cold and rainy weather. Many men who survived measles were weakened, and being poorly clothed, suffered from illness due to the harsh weather. Lee's letters to his family tell of these hardships, his concern for his poorly clothed men and his discouragement. Rose Ann Crouse's Confederate widow's pension application indicates that Henderson died of "percussive fever", probably pneumonia.
