Description	:	Henry was the son of Herman Gerken and Mary Catherine Theresia Schulte. He married Anna Winter on 19 FEB 1878 in St. Boniface Church, New Vienna, Dubuque, Iowa. He married Anna Winter on 19 FEB 1878 in St. Boniface Church, New Vienna, Dubuque, Iowa. They were the parents of Louis, Mary, George, Leo, Herbert, Wilhelmina, Irma, Alphonse, Ewald, and Zita. OBITUARY - Henry was born on a farm south of New Vienna, Iowa. He received his education in the parochial and rural schools in New Vienna and after his studies took to assisting his father on the farm. Later he took up the carpenter trade, which occupation he followed until his death. He was well known as a builder and a contractor in the New Vienna area. Henry married Anna Winter in 1878 with Rev Rather Schulte, relative of M.C. Schulte, officiating. Anna was born in Dubuque and moved with her parents when she was 4. She received her education at St Boniface parochial school. They both lived in New Vienna all their married lives. Anna was at one time president of the Alter Society for a term of 5 years, and also secretary of the rosary society for a number of years. They were members of St Boniface church in New Vienna. They both were devout christians and highly respected citizens. On August 13, 1914, Thursday evening at about 9:50, Henry was killed in an automobile accident about 5 miles north of Luxemberg, Iowa. One other person, Adam J Hoffer, was also killed and 2 others were injured on the return trip from a fishing party in Guttenberg, IA on the Mississippi River. The auto missed a culvert and Henry was thrown out of the car along with 3 others and Hoffer was pinned under the car. Henry died of a fracture of the left temporal bone. The funeral took place on August 17, at St Boniface church with burial was in the church cemetery, Rev. Thole celebrating requiem mass and Rev. Pape officiated at the graveside services. Hoefer and Henry Gherken, Victims of Awful Accident - AUTOMOBILE MISSES A CULVERT ~ Henry Boege Had a Jaw Broken, Helberger Family of Ryan Had Narrow Escape ~ A.J. Hoefer and Henry Gherken, two prominent residents of New Vienna, were instantly killed about 9:30 o’clock Thursday night, when the automobile in which they were returning from a fishing trip near Guttenburg was upset. Hoefer’s skull was fractured and Mr. Gherkens’s neck was broken. Henry Boege, another member of the party had his jaw broken and received a number of severe bruises and cuts. Dr. Allen and Jack Raymond, who was driving the heavy car, escaped with only a few minor injuries. It appears the party left New Vienna early on Thursday morning to spend the day at Guttenberg. The accident happened as they were returning home, and when about five miles south of Luxemburg the driver of the car, swinging around a curve, missed the culvert and in an instant the car was in a ditch crushing out the lives of two of the party. Persons in the vicinity who saw the car last declared that it was traveling at a high rate of speed, which is undoubtedly the cause for the shocking accident. Mr. Hoefer was about sixty years of age, and was Justice of the Peace at New Vienna, and one of the elder residents of the town. Until a few years ago he conducted the hotel business at New Vienna. He had held a number of political offices in Dubuque County prior to being elected Justice of the Peace. He leaves a wife and four children, all residents of New Vienna. Mr. Gherken was nearly 57 years of age at the time of his death. He too, was one of the old residents of New Vienna, and was a highly respected citizen. He is survived by his wife and nine children, most of whom live in New Vienna. The funeral of Mr. Gherken was held on Monday morning at 9:30 o’clock and the funeral of Mr. Hoefer was held on Tuesday morning. Both funeral were held at St. Boniface Church, New Vienna, and the services being conducted by Father Rev. Pape. The automobile which belonged to T. J. Langmann, proprietor of the New Vienna garage, was considerably wrecked.
