Darby, March 15. --Special -- Final tribute was paid Tuesday afternoon to the late Mrs. Henrietta J. Overturf, who died early Sunday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R.E. Townsend, a large concourse following the pioneer woman to the grave. Mrs. Overturf was born at Knightstown, Ind., in 1829 and was in her 83rd year when death came. With her husband, the late R.C. Overturf, she came west to Montana in 1880, living first at Deer Lodge and a year later moving to the Bitter Root. Mrs. Overturf was the first mother to come to this portion of the valley with her family, and bravely held on during the tedious transformation of the raw country to prosperous communities of towns and farms. She was a gifted writer, and newspaper articles from the Bitter Root Times, Hamilton's first paper, and the Darby Sentinel (published in the early nineties here by the late James T. Fariss) are still cherished by relatives. She was known as "Aunt Etta" to the entire valley. Her study little figure walking along the roads, covering great distances for one of such advanced age, was a common sight up to the last week of her life. She was the mother of eight children, six of whom survive. They are Frank H., and Lou W. Overturf, Mrs. Grant Shook, Mrs. Charles McWhirk, Mrs. L. McKinney and Mrs. B.E. Townsend. There are 40 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren and two of the fifth generation. A sister, Mrs,. Ella Dennen, lives at Long Beach, Cal. A son, Walter, who died shortly after reaching manhood some 20 years ago, and a baby daughter, Pearl, rest with the father in the family plot of the local cemetery. The daughter's grave was the first one made in the cemetery. Following the service at the Townsend home by Rev. F.J. Salsman, the body was Interred (sic) by the husband's side, the last chapter in the life of a pioneer woman who, shoulder to shoulder, wrested a home for her children and helped to lay a foundation for a community in the one-time wilderness. Henrietta was listed as a Byram, widow of Bennet K in the probate of Bennett K Byram; she was listed as Byram on the 1850 census under her step father John Bell, and her marriage record reads Barram because of Bennets southern drawl.
