Description	:	Henrietta Sylvester "Hattie" McDonald was the daughter of Sylvester Magdalaine McDonald (1817-1863), and her grandfather was Jean Baptiste Magdalaine AKA McDonald one of the earliest pioneer settlers who came to the St Charles area of Missouri during the time of the Spanish rule in the late 1700's from Quebec, Canada. He is included in "A History of Missouri: From the Earliest Explorations and Settlements Until the Admission of the State into the Union" by Louis Hauck published in 1908. On page 91 (526) it states: "Among other early settlers and inhabitants of Portage des Souix (MO), we may enumerate...Baptiste McDonald... Read More	Henrietta Sylvester "Hattie" McDonald was the daughter of Sylvester Magdalaine McDonald (1817-1863), and her grandfather was Jean Baptiste Magdalaine AKA McDonald one of the earliest pioneer settlers who came to the St Charles area of Missouri during the time of the Spanish rule in the late 1700's from Quebec, Canada. He is included in "A History of Missouri: From the Earliest Explorations and Settlements Until the Admission of the State into the Union" by Louis Hauck published in 1908. On page 91 (526) it states: "Among other early settlers and inhabitants of Portage des Souix (MO), we may enumerate...Baptiste McDonald (1799)." Her mother was Catherine Ciprotte born about 1829 in Illinois. "Hattie" married John William Nahm on 14 Nov 1872. They were married only two years when he died leaving her with one infant son and pregnant with another. On 1 Dec 1877 she married William Alexander Pereau. William was well known in St Charles from his connection with the various newspaper establishments of that place. In his History of Pioneer Families of Missouri" published in 1876, William S Bryan writes (pg 179) "... in October 1871, in company with his brother, William (Alexander) Pereau and William S. Bryan, established the St. Charles News....He was a soldier of the "Lost Cause," and participated in a number of the hottest contests of that war (Civil War). In February 1873, after having disposed of his interest in the St Charles News, he went to Texas and traded in "Long Horns," and, in a financial point of view, got badly "hoisted." Hattie and William had five children, including Peter Alexander Pereau (1881-1905) who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Their son Savoy William Pereau (1879-1959) carried on his father's tradition as a newspaper man and printer. Their daughter, Ursula "Sue" Pereau married the entrepreneur and mining tycoon Charles Thornley Dana. Her youngest daughter Marie married Edward Schroeder in 1907. Her obituary published in the St Louis Dispatch stated- "Pereau- Entered into rest on Monday, July 27, 1925 at 7:05 p.m., Hattie Pereau, beloved mother of Mrs Edward (Marie) Schroeder, Ursula, Robert (Nahm), Savoy (William), and John (Nahm) and the late Peter (Alexander) Pereau, our dear grandmother, great grandmother and mother-in-law, at the age of 71 years. Funeral Thursday, July 30 at 8:30 a.m. from the Kron Chapel, 2707 N. Grand Boulevard to Visitation Church. Interment in memorial Park Cemetery." St Charles (Mo.) papers please copy. Some controversy existed concerning her maiden name until it was discovered that her grandfather Jean Baptiste Magdalaine (1779-1829) had taken on the Americanized name McDonald upon his arrival in Missouri sometime in the 1790's. Her father Sylvester Magdalaine McDonald is also buried at San Borromeo Cemetery in St Charles.
