She was born at Davenport, Iowa, September 27, 1879, the daughter of John Jacob and Mary Amelia (Vieths) Hehnke. Her father, a farmer, was born at Schlesing, Germany, October 20, 1844, and died at St. Edward, Nebraska, July 23, 1931; his father, Jacob Hehnke, died in 1850, in Germany, and his mother, Margaret Hehnke, died at sea in 1873, just before the ship sailed into New York Harbor. Mary (Vieths) Hehnke was born in Illinois, September 25, 1852, and died at St. Edward, November 4, 1925. She was always active in helping her neighbors, and was vitally interested in giving her children a thorough education. Her father, Ditmer Vieths, was born at Holstein, Germany, and died at Potter, Nebraska, in 1917. Her mother, Sarah (Burger) Vieths, was born in Pennsylvania, and died at St. Edward, in 1892. Miss Hehnke received most of her early education in the rural schools of Boone County, where she was graduated in 1895. She passed the teachers' examinations in 1895, and then was a student in the St. Edward High School for three years. In the fall of 1899, she began her study at Peru State Normal College, and in 1910, was graduated from that institution, attending school for 5 period, and then teaching to support herself in her determination to secure an education. In the summer of 1917, she took a course in Palmer Penmanship at Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She has taught in the following schools: District 54, rural, three years; District 8, rural, two years; St. Edward, 1905-06; Campbell, Nebraska, 1906-08; Hooper, Nebraska, 1908-09; Superior, Nebraska, 1910-12; District 5, rural, 1912-13; and St. Edward, since 1913. She is now supervisor of the grammar department of the St. Edward public school. Miss Hehnke is a member of the program committee of the Parent-Teachers' Association, the Nebraskana Society, and the Red Cross. She has held all offices in the Rebecca Lodge, is a charter member of Chapter D. of the P. E. O. at St. Edward, and holds membership in the Nebraska State Teachers' Association. In 1896, she affiliated with the First Presbyterian Church of St. Edward, where she has been an exceptionally active member of Christian Endeavor for many years.
