Bruno had died there on that day. About a month ago, being in failing health, Mr. Bruno left here for Hot Springs in the hope that the waters would help him. Since arriving there he had been slowly sinking, until death came to him on Saturday last. Mr. Bruno was born at Akron, Ohio in 1842 and was therefore 40 years of age at the time of his death. He came to Merrick county in its ealy days, residing for a time near Chapman. He was a man of many estimable qualities, and of more than ordinary ability, and was well known and respected by all. He represented Merrick county in the legislature of 1877, and throughout the state had a vast number of acquaintances who will hear of his death with genuine sorrow. The corpse was sent home for interment and the funeral is to occur today under the auspecies of the different secret societies of which he was a member. Bruno, which occurred at Hot Springs, Ark., on Saturday, March 18th was not entirely unexpected by those most intimately acquainted with him, but who earnestly hoped for a different result to the last. He began failing in health during October 1881, at which time a nervous attack impaired his eye sight, and at the earnest solicitation of his friends he placed himself under the charge of a occulist at Omaha for treatment. The operation was too powerful for his system, and after one month he returned home, broken down in body. Unable to engage in his profession, he tired of inactivity, and determined on some effort tending to restoration to health. The magnetic qualities of the hot springs promised this relief, and thither he repaired on Thursday, February 16, 1882, after which followed a postal card laden with hope, a telegram announcing his death and the casket containing all that was mortal of the poor sufferer. Alone among strangers, "He passed from life to his rest in the grave." Mr. Bruno was born in Summit county, Ohio, in 1840, where he remained with his parents until 1861, at which time he removed to Fulton county, Indiana, where he engaged in teaching school. In 1862 he enlisted in Co. K, 46 regiment, Indiana volunteers, and served his country for one year. During his term of enlistment his regiment was engaged in Arkansas, and strange coincidence, he returned to die within a few miles of the place where the disease causing his death was contracted so many years ago. Ater his discharge for disability he returned to Ohio, where he remained until 1865, when he removed to Michigan and studied law in the town of Vernon and also engaged in teaching and farming. January 13, 1872 he was united in marriage with Augusta Pemberton, and the following spring he came to Nebraska and located in Prairie Creek precinct. He early identified himself with every enterprise instituted for the development and improvement of his adopted state. He was elected to represent his county in the legislature of 1877, and his friends point with honest pride to his every act while a member of that body. He was an earnest and enthusiastic supporter of Hon. Alvin Saunders for United States senator in the caucus and the legislature from the first ballot until his election. In 1879 he removed to Chapman, where he remained until the latter part of 1880, when he came to Central City and engaged in the practice of law until overtaken by death. The Masonic lodge at Hot Springs placed the body in a casket and consigned it to his friends here, when it was taken in charge by the Masonic and Odd Fellow societies. The funeral took place on Thursday, March 23d and was largely attended. He leaves a wife and three chidlren, who have the sympathy of all. The writer hereof has been on very intimate terms with Mr. Bruno for three years, and this intimacy has from day to day strengthened the conclusion that a more honest, faithful, charitable man has never lived. He had no enemies, only among those who were unacquainted with him, and when once he gave a friend the confidence of his great heart, his devotion was never withdrawn. He was honest, he was faithful, and all during his varied experience he never betrayed a cause or a friend. He conscienciously clung to his convictions of right and no influence, however strong, could check or cause him to turn from his course. Now that he is gone, those who judged him at his invaluable worth will cherish his name and memory with a sacred devotion, while the stranger enemy, who is wont to judge others by a rule warped by personal prejudices, will follow the old custom of heaping roses upon the grave, marking the end of a journey desecrated with ashes of their own scattering. He was a man of great ambition and hoped for better things in the future. Although "in the past," in the language of a friend, "he had his full share of hope deferred, and an abundance of proof of man's ingratitude to man." His ambitions are satisfied. We do not mourn. We rather rejoice that we have been permitted to enjoy the influence of one that wilfully did no wrong, but was influenced by what appeared right. If his future happiness depends upon a strict observance of the rules of the church in this life, that happiness must stand impaired; if judged by his works from a life of earnest devotion to the triumph of right, his reward will be great.
