COWLES was born in Nauvoo, Ill., on the 8th day of December, 1841, and passed from this life at his home at Pleasanton on the 30th day of July, 1913, being aged 71 years, 7 months and 21 days. The days of his boyhood were spent in the famed Nauvoo and he was intimately acquainted with all the stirring events that transpired in that early day frontier city. In June of 1854, he, with his parents emigrated to Decatur County, Iowa, in which county he has since maintained his residence, except during the period when he was in the South land and helping to fight his country's battles. Mr. COWLES was one of the pioneer spirits of this locality, and to the men of his stamp must be given the credit of its material development. When the call went out for volunteers in the Rebellion, Mr. COWLES unhesitatingly aligned himself on the side of his convictions and went to the front as a private of Co. M, 3rd Iowa Cavalry, enlisting on the 15th day of August, 1861, and being honorably discharged on the 9th day of August, 1865, thus serving nearly four years. As a soldier Mr. COWLES had the respect and confidence of both his comrades and his officers. He was a friend and brother of every man in the ranks and more than one veteran owes his liberty and life to the untiring efforts and undaunted bravery of this man on the field of battle and on the wearisome march. His courage was unquestioned and his friendship and help an inspiration. While in the barracks at St. Louis and on his way to the front he was converted to the faith of the Christ during a meeting held under the auspices of the Y.M.C.A. and all during his soldiering he was perpetually laboring in the interest of his Master for the salvation of souls. He united with the M.E. Church at Union School House while at home on a furlough and for many years was an energetic worker in that denomination. At the time of his death he was a member of the Christian Union Church, he being one of the chief officials of his church body. All through his life since his conversion he had taken an active interest in church and religious affairs. He was a working Christian, being continually about the affairs of the Kingdom. He was united in marriage to Miss ROSA WOODS on August 19, 1866, and to this union were born seven children, six of whom survive, one having died in infancy. The children are Mrs. LAURA GRIFFIN, of Saline, Mo.; Mrs. NELLIE ROBINSON, of Leon; AUSTIN and EMMET, of Pleasanton; WINNIE, of Tulare, Cal., and OTIS of Hackensack, N.J., who with the aged wife and one brother, CORYDON COWLES, of Davis City, and one sister, Mrs. MARTHA SHAFFER, of Orange, Cal., are left to mourn his passing. The funeral services were held from the Christian Union Church at Pleasanton on July 30, at 2:00 p.m., conducted by Revs. Burrows, of Cainsville, and Place, of Davis City.
