Description	:	Son of James Steel Hanna (b. 1832) and Nancy Ann Steinman (b. 1833), Henry Hanna (b. 1868 Illinois) was 7 years old when his father disappeared in Missouri. The next year his mother took her five children and moved to Nebraska to homestead. In April of 1898 Henry A. Hanna and two partners were outfitted in Seattle, Washington to mine gold in Alaska. Their ship first stopped at Dutch Harbor, and then went on to Kotzebue Sound (near the Chukchi Sea - NW Alaska). Their ship first stopped at Dutch Harbor, and then went on to Kotzebue Sound (near the Chukchi Sea - NW Alaska). From Kotzebue they traveled up the Yukon River as far as they could, then headed by dogsled to an area north of the Arctic Circle, where they staked their claim and began to dig a pit mine. The winter was spent building fires in the pit and then digging the thawed dirt out of the pit. The summer months were spent washing the gold out of the accumulated dirt. Eventually their pit mine was 40 feet deep. After one year they returned to Seattle to assay their gold. Their largest nugget was the size of man's fist and assayed to be worth $960. Relatives later said that the total worth of the gold they mined was less than the cost of equipment, supplies and food for their year in Alaska. In Alaska at that time, a sack of flour was $100 and one potato was $1. Around 1900 Henry Hanna developed a cancerous tumor in his neck. He was treated surgically at Lincoln, Nebraska.
