Read More	Mr. Henry Barrier, died at his home in South Salem township last Thursday morning at 8 o'clock. For nearly nine years he had be an invalid suffering from the effects of a stroke of paralysis which he received the day of Thanksgiving 1894. For the past year or two he has not been strong enough to be out of bed but little. He had been suffering from a cold for several days. Wednesday evening he was very nervous but at last went to sleep apparently. Nothing was suspected for the worse till morning. Not waking as usual at last they tried to wake him, but found him unconscious in which condition he remained til he passed away. Mr. Barrier was born in Lexington, North Carolina, May 5, 1835, being one of the youngest of a large family. He was married in Lexington, North Carolina August 10, 1848, to Phrany Clodfelter, who died June 19, 1858 in Lexington. Four children were born to them, Robert, Samuel, Joseph and Julian, the three oldest of whom are living. On July 19th 1860 in Lexington, he married Sarah Ann Delap, who died February 23rd, 1891. Six children blessed this union, Lucy, John, Frank, Sallie, Walter and Cora, all of whom are living except the oldest. Mr. Barrier, familiarly known as "Uncle Henry" one of Greenwood county oldest citizens. He removed from North Carolina to Greenwood county, Kansas, in the spring of 1870, where he homesteaded a piece of land, which he has made his home ever since. He passed through the hardships of droughts and grasshoppers of the early days successfully and since then has been a prosperous farmer, adding nearly a section to his original homestead. Mr. Barrier united when a young man with the German Reformed church. After moving to this state he united with the Presbyterian church, of which he remained a member until his death. All the surviving children but two are living in and near Eureka. Samuuel lives on a farm in Labette county, Frank a pastor of the First Presbyterian church of Blackwell, Oklahoma. These came home for the funeral which was held at his home Saturday at one o'clock and was conducted by the Rev. Geo. Johns. The interment was in the Barrier cemetery in South Salem township. From Eureka Herald 10 November 1903 page 1. Henry Barrier, old settler of Greenwood county, died at his home in South Salem township, at 3:00 A.M. Thursday, November 5, 1903. He had been confined to his bed for the past ten years, the result of a paralytic stroke. He was past 70 years old. He was the father of Walter, Joseph and R. L. Barrier of Eureka; John, Sallie and Cora Barrier, who resided with their father in South Salem; Samuel Barrier of Fort Scott, Kansas, and T. F. Barrier of Blackwell, Okla. Mr. Barrier had lived on Fall River northwest of Eureka for more than thirty years and had the respect and friendship of all who knew him. The funeral service will be held from the family residence in South Salem tomorrow. Interment will be in the Barrier cemetery.
