He married Elizabeth Sink of Lexington January 25, 1837. Seven children were born to this union: Susan, Sarah, Abram W., Margaret, Clara, William, and Harlan Winslow Barrier. Solomon died 20 June 1874, and is buried on the northwest corner of the homestead. His widow, Elizabeth in 1874 gave one acre of land to Salem Township for a cemetery, known as Barrier Cemetery. Elizabeth died in 1890 and is buried next to her husband. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Solomon Barrier died at his residence in Salem township, Greenwood county, Kansas, on 20th day of June, 1874. The deceased was born January 25, 1814, in Davidson county, North Carolina; was married to Elizabeth Zinck, of the same county and state. Despairing of obtaining more than North State, he emigrated with his little family to Edwards county, Illinois, in 1843, where he continued to reside till 1869, when he removed to Greenwood county, Kansas, and settled seven miles above Eureka, on Fall River, where he continued to reside until his death. It does not seem right to suffer on one who had lived a long, useful and upright life to pass away with out saying something more than he is gone to that borne from whence no traveler returns. He moved to Illinois in what was then and since called the "hard times," which was nothing more nor less than a general stagnation in business, caused by the contraction of the national currency by the general government. He had to encounter almost the difficulties and privation of pioneer life, and to labor under hard ship incident to the hard times, the pressure of financial troubles and revulsions of trade, through which the country was then passing, to which the young men of the present day are perfect strangers. Notwithstanding the incessant industry and close economy that was then necessary to enable to him to obtain the necessaries of life, the deceased was always interested in public affairs and identified with whatever he conscientiously believed to be for the best interests of society. We can truly say that he was honorable in all the relations of life. As a citizen he made it his business to inform himself on the great political issues of the day, and use his influence on what he considered the side of liberty, equality and justice, without regard to popularity. As a neighbor, social, honest and obliging; as a husband and father, kind and affectionate, ever endeavoring to provide for and make comfortable those of his own household. He had been a professor of the Christian religion for nearly years, and all who knew him can testify that he ever walked as becomes the follower of Christ. He leaves an aged and feeble companion, with seven children and nine grand children, to mourn his loss. But they sorrow not as those who have no hope. May our Heavenly Father, who "tempers the wind to shorn lamb," grant his helping grace to sustain them in this their time of trail. May they be enabled to look to the Rock that is higher than we.
