Wood, Dear Sir: I noticed in the Recorder that I had three bullet holes through my clothes. This is not quite true. I had only two small holes through my rain coat, made by shrapnel from a small shell. This occurred on the British sector when the 317th Infantry was in the lines for the first time ,with the New Zealand troops. This was about the 25th of July. We carried our rations nearly two miles the first day and one mile the second day, as they moved the kitchen up during the night. We were in reserve two days. The mud and water was only waist deep in places and in one place the trench was only waist deep, owing to heavy shell fire, for nearly one hundred yards. Every time we went for rations the Germans shelled us; as we passed this place. On my third trip after rations, I had two two gallon cans of tea tied together across my shoulders, and as we passed this place the shell began to fall very near so I handed the tea to a New Zealander and "beat it." I couldn't have my speed lessened by a few gallons of tea. The New Zealand troops were a fine lot of men. The sergeant and corporal's took the hardest part of he work. One of the men gave me a piece of fruit cake that came from New Zealand. It was mailed May 8th. I was to visit the Company Dec. 27th and 28th. All the Highland boys with Co. "D" are well. A.M. Jack and J.F. Saul were the last two soldiers to come out of the woods that were full of machine gun nests on Oct. 4th. They did not get the order to retreat, and had to come back through the barrage that the Americans put on the wood. They had the pleasure of using their chain shot rifle on three Germans while in he woods. They had heard of (Harry) Swecker's death. I was sorry to learn of the deaths Nicholas, Hevener and Swecker, and of Corbett & Eagle being wounded. They were among the best men in the 317th Infantry. I well remember the friendly rivalry of Nicholas and Swecker on the rifle range, at Camp Lee. The first time on the range they tied on each of the one, two, and three hundred yard range, with a total of 145. There were but two better scores made in the company 146 and 149. On the five hundred yard range Nicholas and another soldier, shooting the same rifle, made 86 and 83 respectively which was the best in the company. I have been on detached service with the Division Ordnance since Aug. 2nd. I've had it easy compared with he other Highland boys. The boys in the infantry during Oct. and Nov. deserve every thing that the people of Highland can do for them. Sincerely, H.B. HOOK. Highland Recorder June 11, 1959 Burton Hook, 68, of Doe Hill died Friday, June 5 of a heart attack. He was a well known grower and farmer. Mr. Hook was born on the Cowpasture near Headwaters and was a son of the late George W. and Phoebe Todd Hook. He had lived most of his life in Highland and a veteran of World War I. A graduate of Dunsmore Business College, he was employed by the Federal Government for more than twenty three years and worked: with the alcoholic tax unit out of Staunton, Richmond and Lynchburg. Upon retirement due to his health in 1949, he devoted his time to breeding purebred Southdown sheep at Doe Hill Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Doe Hill Methodist Church, conducted by Dr. W. Rhoad. Burial was in the family cemetery near Doe Hill with Obaugh Funeral Home in charge. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Lura Hiner Hook; a brother, Sandy C. Hook of Headwaters; and one sister, Mrs. Ocia Price of Staunton.
