Coming from Nebraska City where we had lived all of our lives, this was quite an experience. We had a lot of things to learn, but as usual we had wonderful neighbors to help us. Two weeks after our arrival we were completely hailed out. Then an early frost killed the replant. It was all bad times, there was fun and entertainment as well. Sunday school was started in the school house. Rev. Thomas Perkins from the Methodist Church would come out every Sunday afternoons. Mother was the Superintendent. This was held for several weeks. During the Winter months, Literany meetings were held. Most Saturday nights there was a party someplace and we enjoyed the party games. Later on dances were held in the school house. Some winter evenings neighbors would get together for card parties. High Five and Razzle Dazzle were favorite games. The children played together until they became sleepy, then crawled up on the bed amongst the wraps piled there and took a nap. Father passed away in 1926 and Mother in 1942. Sydney and Carl have also died. Hazel, Olive and Susie are all that are left. we make our homes in the West. The depression years were quite rugged. Following the closing of the banks, times of drought and days of the dust bowl, there was a general exodus of families to take up land in Oregon. The Roy Rookstool, Chris Rookstool and Cleve Perkin from our particular neighborhood were among them. Silos were filled with the small amount of crops in the field. Some even cut the Russian thistles (thumbleweeds) for silage, but they weren't satisfactory. (If we remember correctly, they became mushy.) During this time the government purchased cattle at $20.00 a head, and calves from one day old to one month at $5.00 each. They were slaughtered. A few days later, due to the hot weather it became necessary to bury them. Feed prices were high and feed was hard to get. The dust storms were terrible. You couldn't keep it out of the house. It would pile up against the fences and fence posts. In some places the posts were buried. You could look at the sun with you naked eyes and it would be a red ball, just as thought you were looking at it thought a piece of smoked glass. The few times it rained, it was like mud falling. Shortly after we moved to the farm, we had new neighbors on the Jodeman place, that was just east of us. Henry and Belle Adams and their family were former neighbors of ours in Nebraska City, when wer girls were quite small. Syd and Mae Adams had been childhood sweethearts and married a short time before the "Flu Epidemic". Both of them as well as her brother, Hubert, and his wife fell victims to the disease. That was a terrible time. Mae did not survive. Arthur, the oldest son, had married and established a home of his own. Hubert was living in the west. Albert and Carl worked on various farms. That left Ralph, Frank and Dorothy at home. As the entire family was musically inclined, we had some wonderful times at our house. Hazel and Ralph married, so you see the families have always been quite close. Mr. and Mrs. Adams, Mae and Hubert have all died. The family is scattered from Nebraska, Nevada, California to Washington.
