Henry Christian Heagley was born Oct. 3, 1915, to Frank Elmer and Virginia (Bain) Heagley near Wetonka, S.D., where he was raised and received his education. As a young man, Henry loved to hunt, fish and play pool and continued these pursuits throughout his life. Henry enjoyed all sports and was a pitcher for a Wetonka Baseball Team. Henry married Amy Maria Groop June 30, 1936, near Frederick, S.D., on the Groop Farmstead. Henry and Amy lived on a farm in McPherson County for the next 63 years. For 27 years, they followed the harvest from southern Oklahoma to North Dakota. In the fall of 2000, they moved to Aberdeen, where they had since resided. Henry and Amy were married nearly 70 years. Henry was an excellent mechanic. Building tractors, combine trailers, and working to build a carburetor for better gas mileage were some of his efforts. Mechanically creative, Henry built a prototype of an early snowmobile using an airplane engine and propeller. He also worked on a still to make alcohol to mix with gasoline. Many neighbors came to have their machinery welded or vehicles fixed. From the 1940s to the early 1970s, Henry and Amy were hosts to out-of-state hunters. Henry himself was an avid hunter and sportsman. After retiring from the 27 years of custom harvesting, Henry started trap shooting. He and Amy traveled to many shooting events from El Reno, Okla., to Missouri to Reno, Nev. He won numerous trophies and was awarded the South Dakota Trapshooting Sportsman of the Year in 1996. Henry continued to shoot through early 2006. Surviving Henry are his children, Pat (Paul) Dullum of Pequot Lakes, Minn., Gail Erdmann of Aberdeen, S.D., Joanne (Harvey) Schanzenbach of Bismarck, N.D., Henry Frank (Shirley) Heagley of Westport, S.D., and Amy (Bennett) Clark of Rapid City, S.D.; two sisters, Florence Andrews of Britton, S.D., and Carol (Earl) McCulloch of Aberdeen, S.D.; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. Henry was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Amy, in April of 2006; and one brother, Elmer. Pallbearers will be Henry's grandsons, Jason Heagley, Jon Dullum, Chris Dullum, Martin Dullum, Tod Schanzenbach, Max Schanzenbach, Melvin Schanzenbach and Stewart Schanzenbach. Honorary pallbearers will be Henry's granddaughters, Dawn Heagley, Jane Dullum, Krystal Erdmann, Kathryn Smith and Laura Siefkes. Published in the Aberdeen News on 5/2/2007.
