Amy passed away Tuesday, April 25, 2006, at her home. Amy Maria Groop was born April 15, 1915, to Herman and Elsa (Paakkonen) Groop near Frederick, S.D. Amy was the youngest of eight children. Amy attended country school and graduated from Frederick High School. She attended Northern Normal School where she received a Teaching Certificate. Amy taught country school located on the Forbes Road for one year. Amy moved to Chicago, Ill., where she worked for the Duvall family. She later returned to South Dakota and taught at the same country school she attended as a child. Amy married Henry Heagley June 30, 1936, near Frederick, S.D., on the Groop Homestead. They lived and farmed in McPherson County for 63 years. To help with the family's income, Amy raised chickens and turkeys. At one point she shot a weasel that was after the chickens. Henry and Amy later began custom harvesting, which they did for 27 years. Amy did all of the cooking and washing of clothes for her family and the hired crew. In the fall of 2000, Henry and Amy moved to Aberdeen where they have since resided. Amy was a member of the First Baptist Church. Amy enjoyed gardening, sewing, reading, fishing and going on trap shooting trips with Henry. She enjoyed her Bible Study Group and Extension Club. Amy was a wonderful hostess and always made room at her kitchen table for family, friends and strangers. Surviving Amy are her husband, Henry of Aberdeen; her children, Pat (Paul) Dullum of Pequot Lakes, Minn., Gail Erdmann of Aberdeen, S.D., Joanne (Harvey) Schanzenbach of Bismarck, N.D., Henry Frank (Shirley) Heagley of Westport, S.D., and Amy (Bennett) Clark of Rapid City, S.D.; one sister, Sigrid Maunu of Minneapolis, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Amy was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters and two brothers. Pallbearers will be grandsons: Jason Heagley, Chris Dullum, Jon Dullum, Martin Dullum, Stewart Schanzenbach, Max Schanzenbach, Melvin Schanzenbach and Tod Schanzenbach. Honorary pallbearers will be granddaughters: Kathryn Smith, Laura Siefkes, Jane Dullum, Krystal Erdmann and Dawn Heagley. Published in the Aberdeen News on 4/28/2006.
