Burial with military rites by the Hastings post of the Veterans of Foreign Wasrs directed by Joseph Smidt of Hastings. The firing squad was from the Hastings Naval Ammunition Depot and Bugler Roger Holthaus sounded "Taps." The American Flag was presented to the Smidt family by Major Young of Grand Island. Private Smidt was born Nov 2, 1933, near Lawrence and lived in the Pauline community until he enlisted for military service... Private Smidt was born Nov 2, 1933, near Lawrence and lived in the Pauline community until he enlisted for military service in Feb of 1952 and went to Fort Lee, VA, for training. Following a week's furlough (July) with his family in Glenvil, he was sent to San Francisco from where he was sent overseas to Kukura, Japan. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sister, Mrs. Norris Gardner of Deweese, and five brothers, Claus of Superior, George of Waco, TX, Ernest of Holyoke, CO, Richard of Juniata, and Arnold of Glenvil.
