A terrible tragedy occurred in the house of Mr. W, Decker, a well-to-do and highly respected farmer of Osage county and residing only five miles west of Bland, last Thursday, February 20th, which ended with the killing of Henry, oldest son of Mr. Decker by his younger brother. Early in the morning of that day, Mr. Decker started off to Boehm's Store with a load of wheat and Mrs. Decker having left to call on a neighboring -family the two bovs were alone at home, . Soon after this Louis Lore, a neighbor's boy, called at the liouse and asked Henry Decker to accompany him on a short hunting trip, to which he consented. After getting everything ready, he asked his brother Stephan, for the gun-caps, which the latter refused to give him, whereupon Henry tried to take the caps from him; Stephan ran off, but seeing that his brother was overtaking him, he stopped and drew his knife for the purpose of warding him off, Henry, however, did not heed the danger and rushed on to Stephen; but he had hardly laid hold on him Stephen struck him with the knife, which entered the breast near the region of tho heart. Henry put his hand over the wound and fell to the ground, again springing to his feet he ran a few yards toward the house where he again fell. At this time Louis Lore ran to his assistance and in his arms Henry Decker breathed his last. Neighboring children ran down to Boettcher's Saw Mill, where they related the sad affair to a several parties, who at once hurried to the scene, where they found Henry Decker dead in a pool of blood and Stephen Decker, his brother, bending over him, weeping in apparent great agony and crying "Henry, dear brother, get up once more, I didn't intend to hurt you."' 'Squire Iloseler was notified to hold the inquest and the . following jury was summoned: C. Heyer, John Boettcher, Gustav Hirschfehlt, Jay Hugh Burton, Sam. Bayse and Geo. Nickelson. Louis Lore, Win. and I, Stephen Decker, who were the only witnesses, wore examined and gave their evidence clearly, us , related above, whereupon the jury returned a verdict in accordance with the same. . . Henry Decker, was twenty years of age and well thought of; his remain were interred last Friday in the Cemetery of the Mt. Zion Baptist congregation. Stephen Decker, who killed his brother is 16 years and 11 months old. Tho sympathy of the entire community are with the parents of the deceased, and Mrs. Decker, who grieves so much over this sad occurrence that she is nearly at the point of insanity. Decker Died Early Today Well Know Grocery salesman Succumbs at Belle Home After Illness Merritl E. Decker. Gil years old former grocery salesman and member of the boards of education and aldermen, died at his home at Belle at 2:45 o'clock this morning. He had been in failing health the past six years and the last j four mouths he was practically bedfast. His suffering was almost unbearable the last weeks of his life. Death was attributed to heart disease and high blood pressure. Mr. Decker was on the road for 21 years, traveling for a St. Louis grocery house. He lived his entire life in Belle and community for the exception of about five years during the war when he and Mrs. Decker made their home in St. Louis. He was Identified with the growth of Belle and her institutions, serving for years on both the town and school boards. He (was a member of the aldermanic j board when the waterworks system was installed. He was interested in sports, patticulaily baseball, and managed the Belle team at various times. Mr. Decker was born May 18, 1880 at Mt. Zion, a son of Welcome and Mary E. Decker. He and Miss Josephine Lloyd and Henry W. Abel and Miss Amelia Heyer were married Jan. 21, in a double ceremony at the Byron Methodist church. Three children were born of the marriage. One son, Robert of St. Louis, survives, with the wife: one sister. Mrs. Lenna Decker of Belle: and three brothers, Leonard and Jim Decker of Owensville, and Jeff Decker of Union. A sister, Janice, and four brothers, Bill, Steve, Henry and Tom, preceded him in death. He was a member of the Belle Baptist church. The Bland Courier (Bland, MO), 1949-09-29
