Church forty-four years; he and Col. Hardman and wife, Daniel Hare, wife and daughter composed the first M.E. Class in Cedar County; it was organized by Chauncey Hoart in Aug., 1837--over forty years ago. He married Emeline Patterson, from Iowa City, in Oct., 1843; they have three children--Laura, Nettie, and Emma; lost three children--Leonidas, their son, was in the army, in Co. I 46th Regt. I.V.I.; was shot in the head and mortally wounded in a skirmish near Colliersville, Tenn., and died in Chicago Feb. 5, 1865. Margaret and Roscoe died in infancy. Tipton Advertiser 29 Sept 1892, Pg 3 Col 4 BROWN-Henry Durbin Brown was born Feb. 13th, 1813. in Madison county N.Y., and died Sept. 24th, 1892, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Frank Sheldon, living near Tipton, aged 79 years, 6 months and 11 days. He lived in Kentucky fourteen years; moved to Ohio and lived there ten years; came to this country in 1837 and settled at Rochester; came to Tipton in the spring of 1851. In Oct. 1843, he married Emeline Patterson of Iowa City, who died March 1873. His connections were close communion, Baptists. In his eleventh year he went with a lady acquaintance to a Methodist Episcopal Church and stayed for class meeting, which was one of the old style. He received among the rest some instruction from the preacher, and made up his mind at once to be a Methodist. He failed to receive any encouragement at home in that direction, except from a colored man, who was a preacher and who also belonged to the family. He failed to submit to Christ's teachings until Aug. 17th, 1832, being 19 years of age. At this time he attended a M.E. camp meeting in Fairfield county, Ohio, a few miles from Rushville. While listening to a sermon by Rev. Jas. Gilruth on the Office and Operation of the Holy Spirit, he was powerfully convicted of sin and felt that he must yield or fly the track, and then mounted his horse and started for home, but concluded that the most effectual way to drown his conscience was to stop at the cake wagons a mile out and take some whiskey, but in this the devil overshot the mark, for while he was drinking the whiskey he discovered an old acquaintance (who loved whiskey and had spent his fortune in drink) making towards him. He called him by name and said, "I would never do that again." At that he made up his mind and he would take his counsel and quit forever. He resolved, cost what it would, he would serve his God and save his soul, and sat down the glass, which stayed down forever after. His conviction for sin came with double force and he followed on a humble penitent until the 16th of Dec. following. He gave his hand to the church and heart to God, and was saved from sin. His membership was in a small class in the country near the town of Kirksville, Licking Co., Ohio, and he commenced at once to attend to all the means of Grace. His class leader left that settlement in about a year and recommended him as a suitable one to hold the office; he was appointed to his stead, which office he has filled ever since except a few months when he came west. At that time they had a sermon on Holiness and Sanctification once in three months. He failed to receive a blessing until 1849, since which time he has been a witness, with small variation, in as humble and modest way as he knew how, and very seldom failed to receive a blessing from the Father in doing so. He is the last one of six who composed the first in the country class of Colonel Henry Hardman. The sermon at the funeral was preached by Rev. W.R. Dyre, of Inland, as Mr. Brown's pastor, Rev. C.L. Gould was unable to attend through serious illness. The pall bearers were Frank Adams, Wm. Knott, Perry Thompson and Henry Walters. Typed as written
