Mr. Ahrnken was born in Germany, January 5, 1863 and had therefore just passed his seventieth birthday anniversary. He was the son of John and Anna Ahrnken and emigrated to the United States with his parents when he was eight years of age. The family first settled in Wayne township where it resided for a few months, and then settled permanently in Scotch Grove township. The marriage of Mr. Ahrnken to Anna Poppe occurred January 16,1895. The family home was made on the Ahrnken farm in Scotch Grove township until March 1929 when Mr. and Mrs. Ahrnken moved to Monticello where they have lived. There are four children in the Ahrnken family, who together with their mother survive Mr. Ahrnken. They are Mrs. Anna Lange of Scotch Grove, Miss Edna Ahrnken, a teacher in the government schools at Chilecoo, Oklahoma, John, who lives on the home farm in Scotch Grove township, and Louis of Center Junction. There are also two granddaughters surviving, Maxine and Yvonne Lange, and one sister of Mr. Ahrnken, Mrs. Henry Schlemmer of Monticello. Three sisters preceded him in death. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 1 o'clock at the family home, and at 1:30 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran church at Wayne township. Rev. Paul T, Gutknecht was the minister in charge of the services. Mr. Ahrnken's body was laid to rest in the cemetery adjoining the church. Throughout his active life Mr. Ahrnken followed the vocation of a farmer. He was also interested in carpentry work and cabinet making. Whenever the farm work was not too pushing he turned to carpenter work. Under his direction numerous barns were built in Scotch Grove and Wayne townships. Monticello Express 4/20/1933
