Henry moved into Spencer, NE after the death of his wife and son Ellsworth farmed the homeplace. In 1930, Henry was widowed living in Spencer town. The Spencer Advocate (NE); Thurs., 17 Nov 1932; page 1 Spencer citizens were badly shocked and saddened Monday eve when word reached here that Henry Wenke had died suddenly that afternoon, about 4:30, while fighting a fire in one of the buildings on the farm northeast of Spencer. Water pipes had frozen in a hog house and the building caught on fire when the pipes were being thawed by a blow torch, it was reported here. Mr. Wenke had been carrying water until he was exhausted. Mrs. Wenke induced him to rest a while, even though the building did burn, but after only a short pause he picked up another bucket of water and started for the fire again. He went only a few steps and toppled over against the building. His wife thought he had only fainted, and spreading a coat over him she hurried to the house after blankets and other articles with which to revive him. Mrs. Ellsworth Wenke, a daughter-in-law, accompanied the wife out to where Mr. Wenke was lying and attempted to revive him. Dr. Hines happened along at that time and they carried the body to the house, called Dr. Bradley, but their efforts to bring him back to consciousness failed, for Mr. Wenke was dead. The doctor stated that the extra exertion, excitement and exposure had been too much for a heart that not stand the added burden. The hog house burned, but about 500 bushels of grain which was in the building was saved, the end of the structure being knocked out and the grain shoveled to safety. Mr. Wenke was 66 years old. The funeral is being held today, Thursday, from the local M.E. church, conducted by Rev. Dowler. The deceased was highly respected, had lots of friends and no enemies, and will be sincerely missed by many others, as well as the immediate family, consisting of the widow, two sons Ellsworth and Glen, besides other relatives.
