McRoberts, in Highland Township, on Sunday January 27, 1889, Mr. Henry Fitz, aged eighty years, two months and thirteen days. The deceased was born in Fayette County, Pa. Nov. 14,1808 and when quite a small boy emigrated with his parents to Guernsey County, Ohio, shortly after removing from thence to Muskingum County, Ohio, where he grew to manhood. The deceased was born in Fayette County, Pa. Nov. 14,1808 and when quite a small boy emigrated with his parents to Guernsey County, Ohio, shortly after removing from thence to Muskingum County, Ohio, where he grew to manhood. He was married to Miss Jane Lindsay of Gurnsey County, Ohio, March 10, 1831. There was born to this union eight children, of whom six survive him, four daughters and two sons, all residing in this State. He moved from Ohio to Linn County, Iowa. In May, 1853 united with the M.E. Church, in the year 1854, at Roger's Grove, Linn County, Iowa, remaining a consistent member of the same until his death. "The funeral was held on Tuesday, and the services were conducted by his old pastor from Linn County. Mr. Fitz having asked this as a personal favor some time before he died. The attendance was large. The remains were buried in Churdan cemetery. "Last June, Mr. Fitz, conscious of failing health, came to Greene County, and after visiting about for a short time, he concluded to make his home with the daughter at whose house he died. It was at this time that a virulent cancer began its dreadful work in his neck, an ailment no human power could check or cure. Gradually it eat its way into the throat and face, until wearied by pain and exchausted by reason of lost vitality, he went to his rest, mourned by his faithful and loving children and a large circle of friends. He was a kind, affectionate father, a man of rugged integrity of purpose, and of a simple faith which led him into the valley of the shadow of death with no trace of fear, for he knew in whom he believed." Much of this information is duplicated in the following publication on his son, James Wiley Fitz: "His father was Henry Fitz, who was born November 14, 1808, in Pennsylvania, an agriculturist by profession and when James Wiley was but a baby removed to Muskingum county, Ohio, where he operated a large farm. In 1853 he removed to Linn county, Iowa, where he bought a tract of land, which he operated until 1868, when he removed to New Jersey. Here he lived until 1883 when he came to Greene county, Iowa, making his home with his daughter Mary at Churdan until he passed away January 27, 1888. He was a hard working and industrious man and an earnest member of the Methodist Episcopal church, of which he was a steward. He was a whig in the early days and transferred his support to the republican party when it was organized, being elected to many township offices on their ticket. Among his neighbors he had the reputation of being straighforward and honest in all his dealings. His wife, Jane (Lindsey) Fitz, was a native of Pennsylvania, where she was born in 1806, and passed away in 1867, at the age of sixty-one years. These worthy people were the parents of seven children: Elizabeth D., a resident of Minnesota and the widow of John Smyth, an agriculturist and county surveyor, who in his early days was a most successful teacher; Mary, the wife of Abram R. McRoberts, a retired farmer at Churdan; John, a carpenter of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Nancy J., the widow of Henry D. Rogers, of Churdan; James W., the subject of this sketch; and Martha A., who is the widow of Edward N. Wilson and is making her home in Glidden, Iowa; and Samuel C., the youngest, who died at the age of two and one-half years." Note that this refers to Martha's husband's name as "Edward", a mistake that appears to occur in Edgar's death certificate as well.
