Oct 16, 1929 - Carroll Times - Henry F. Vanderheiden was so badly injured in an accident last Thursday evening that he died several hours later and his wife is at St. Anthony hospital suffering from severe injuries received in the same mishap. The couple was driving north on highway No. 71 about eight o'clock and on account of the extremely heavy fog which had enveloped the city earlier in the evening it is presumed Mr. Vanderheiden missed the turn in the highway near the Jacobs grocery. Instead of following the highway, he drove straight ahead and into Mr. Jacobs yard, the car striking a tree nearly three feet in diameter. Mrs. Vanderheiden was thrown through the windshield, receiving a severe scalp wound, a deep cut on one side of her face and a number of body bruises. Mr. Vanderheiden was thrown against the steering wheel, a part of which pierced his chest directly over the heart, tearing a large hole and exposing the heart and one lung. Both bled profusely and were unconscious when help arrived shortly after. The injured were rushed to St. Anthony hospital and given immediate medical attention. Mr. Vanderheiden was conscious for a few moments after which he lapsed into shock from which he never recovered, passing away about 2:30 Friday morning. Mrs. Vauderheiden, while severely injured, is improving at this writing. Henry Francis Vanderheiden, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Vanderheiden, was born at Breda November 8th, 1894, and was 35 years of age at the time of his death. He was married to Bertha Reiman, of Templeton. Three children were born to them. For the past 16 years Mr. Vanderheiden had made his home in this city. He was owner and managed Camp Joy, a tourist cabin camp located on the west side of the city. Mr. Vanderheiden had enjoyed an excellent tourist trade this season and he was formulating plans for making extensive improvements at Camp Joy for next season. Possessed of a pleasing disposition Mr. Vanderheiden easily made friends and he numbered them by his acquaintances. He is survived by his wife, three children, father, 7 brothers, 1 sister, and a number of other relatives. The following survive: his wife, Bertha Reiman Vanderheiden; 3 children: Julia, age 11, Eugene, age 9, and Fred, age 7; his father, J.H. Vanderheiden, who lives in California; sister, Rose, Mrs. Joe Beisch, Carroll; 7 brothers, John L, Carroll, J.P., who is in the navy and stationed at San Diego, Cal., George, Charles, Bernard, James and Raymond, all of Carroll. Funeral services for Mr. Vanderheiden were held Monday morning at nine o'clock at St. Peter and Paul's church, Rev. L. Schenkelberg officiating. Six brothers of the deceased, assisted by Joe Beisch, acted as pall bearers. Burial was in the church cemetery. Among those from a distance who attended the funeral were Bernadine Reiman of Alton, Iowa; Ben Reiman, Nebraska; John Reiman and family of Milford, Ia.; besides a large number of relatives and friends from Templeton, Breda, Wall Lake, and other points.
