HISTORY OF DUBUQUE COUNTY 789 Henry Ganfield, farmer and stock raiser of Dubuque County, was born September 7, 1871, on the old Ganfield homestead in White Water Township, and is a son of the pioneers, Samuel and Mary Jane (Patterson) Ganfield, appropriate notice of whom immediately precedes this. He was educated in the district schools of his neighborhood and assisted his parents with the work of the home farm until 1896. He then married Louisa Denley, who was a daughter of Henry and Louisa (Williams) Denley. Her father came to America and lived in Farley, where he died; mother never came to America. They had but two children, Mrs. Ganfield and David, who died in South Dakota. After his marriage Mr. Ganfield rented a portion of his father's property, which he conducted eight years and during this time bought an adjoining 35 acres. He later bought tracts of 200, 40 and 20 acres, making a total of 295 acres of valuable farm land. All this has been improved and modernized, and today Mr. Ganfield is regarded as one of the prosperous and progressive farmers of the county. He follows general farming and specializes in the raising of fine Norman horses, shorthorn and Durham cattle and Chester White hogs. In political views he is a Republican, but has never held office. He and wife are members of the Presbyterian church. To them have been born the following named children: Nina B., Ruby R., Leslie and Maud, all of whom are at home and the two oldest in school. Obituary Henry Ganfield passed away at the home of his daughters, Mrs. Mary Martin and Mrs. Robert Martin, October 22, 1947, at the age of 76 years after a prolonged illness. He was a son of the late Mary Jane and Samuel Ganfield. His mother was born in Pennsylvania and his father in England. He was born September 7, 1871 in Hazel Valley, 4 miles north of Cascade. On January 1, 1896 he was united in marriage to Louisa Jane Denley, who was born in England. She preceded him in death about 12 years ago. He was a resident and outstanding farmer of Hazel Valley until recent years when he was compelled to retire because of ill health. He was a faithful attendant of the Presbyterian Church of cascade during his entire life. Mr. Ganfield had an active part in the affairs of the farmers Mutual Insurance Association of Farley, Iowa for a number of years. He was a kind and loving father and is survived by the following children: Nina (Mrs. Robert Martin), Ruby (Mrs. Marion Martin), Maud (Mrs. Howard Hutton), Leslie, all of Cascade, and Denley, a minister of Oneida, South Dakota; also by two sisters, Mrs. Edgar Wall of Le Center, Minnesota, and Mrs. Peter Bock of Earlham, Iowa; and one brother, George, of Cascade. He also leaves six grandchildren, Richard, Randall, Roger, David and Jerry Ganfield and Duane Martin. Funeral services were held October 25, 1947 at the Cascade Community Church, Rev. Rubesh of Cascade officiating. The pallbearers were, James T. Bevan, James Gosden, Clarence Martin, Ed Greenwood, Gerald Hamil, Ray Ball, Gene Fagan and A. Fletcher Aitchison.
