Read More	Well known and respected citizen past Saturday morning, April 3rd Samuel Ganfield, one of the best known and respected citizens of Cascade and Whitewater Township, died at the residence of his son, George R. Ganfield, in the latter Township, early Saturday morning. Mr. Ganfield had been in failing health for several years - in fact, it was apparent that he gradually declined in health from the time of the death of his wife three years ago. After her death he lived with his children from time to time, but spent most of the past year with his son George and family. Mr. Ganfield was born in Somersetshire, England, May 17, 1845, and came to Dubuque County with his parents, William and Charlotta Ganfield, in the year 1853, and from that time to his death had lived continuously in Whitewater Township as a farmer and as a resident of Cascade. He worked upon the old homestead with his parents until his marriage, April 19, 1868, to Mary Jane Patterson. He began farming for himself on the old homestead and added thereto from time to time. He was a successful farmer. Naturally steady and industrious, his achievements were fruitful of results and the accumulated an independent competency. The children born to him were: Mary Ellen, deceased; Henry, of Whitewater Township; William A. of Waukesha, Wisconsin; George R. of Whitewater; Mabel, wife of Edgar Wall, of Fergus Falls, Minnesota; Ella, wife of Rev. Peter Bock, of Birmingham, Iowa. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Hannah Newell of Storm Lake, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Ganfield retired from farming and removed to cascade where they lived in happiness and contentment until the unexpected death of Mrs. Ganfield three years ago. Her death was a shock from which he never recovered. Mr. Ganfield was a man of strong character who won and held throughout his lifetime the friendship and respect of his fellowmen. His life was unostentatiously spent but it was an exemplary career; sincere, honest, and upright. He was true as steel to his friends and his opinions, but never offensive. He was a true Christian gentleman, and his death is sincerely mourned by his surviving children and many friends. The funeral was held Monday morning, services being conducted at the Presbyterian Church by Rev. W. H. Kelley, the pastor, assisted by Rev. Davies of the Methodist Church.
