Description	:	Henry George Smith, son of Conrad and Johanna Knapp Smith, was born on December 24, 1873, at Ironton, Oho; and departed this life at his home in Chappell, Nebraska, on June 28, 1962, having reached the age of 88 years 6 months and 4 days. At the age of 18, Mr Smoith moved to Clatonia, Nebraska, where he engaged in farming. On December 14, 1899, he was united in marriage to Anna Martha Kindschi at Clatonia. At the age of 18, Mr Smoith moved to Clatonia, Nebraska, where he engaged in farming. On December 14, 1899, he was united in marriage to Anna Martha Kindschi at Clatonia. Eight children were born to this union. In 1908, the family moved to Garden County, settling in the Kowanda community. Upon their arrival the Smiths were asked to assume the responsibility of the Kowanda post office, of which John Smith, a brother of Henry, had been postmaster. The famiy had been members of the Methodist Church at Clatonia, and were anxious to organize a Methodist Sunday School at their new home. From this small beginning grew the Kowanda church. Mr and Mrs Smith later opened a grocery store and filling station and installed a telephone switchboard. This business enterprise filled a real need in a rapidly growing community, at a period when poor roads and slow vehicles made travel difficult. The family was so closely identified with the location that they became known as the "Kowanda Smiths". In 1921 they discontinued their business, and in 1924 the post office was closed. Mr and Mrs Smith continued their farm operation until 1952, when they moved to Chappell. Mr Smith was a faithful church member. In addition to helping with the organization of the Kowanda Methodist Sunday School, he was a charter member of the Chappell Foursquare Church, and taught a Sunday School class for many years. Early in his life he affiliated with the Woodman of the World, and continued that membership thru his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brother, two sisters and an infant daughter. He is survived by his wife; four sons, Benjamin Andrew, Oliver Henry, Oscar George and Edward Charles; three daughters, Laura Marie Christensen, Clara Alice Vincent, Ellen Elizabeth Clopine; 26 grandchildren, 56 great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren; one brother, Carl Smith, of Atkinson, Nebraska; three sisters; Mary Ridgely, of Beatrice, Nebraska, Elizabeth Doolittle, of Amelia, Nebraska and Viola Doolittle of Cortland, Nebraska. Mr Smith, who had been an invalid for several years, was an uncomplaining patient shut-in. IN MEMORY To see his go was, for a while, a dreadful thing. The thought that he, so dear to us, would never bring again The wisdom, love, the care, the tender nurturing. But this was just a momentary thought, Really - a human notion fraught with self-pity For soon there came over all my soul The clear knowledge that on Jesus' Name he trusted And then a glorious thought took hold of me, A vision of celestial places, Of saints of God, familiar faces, All praising God with one accord. And so I knelt and thanked the Lord That my dear Dad, released and free, Would life with Christ - eternally!
