Description	:	Henry Hiatt, was born in to the Quaker family of Silas and Anna Clary Hiatt on December 30, 1816 in Warren County, Ohio. He was married to Frances in Wayne County, Indiana and had lived in Cincinnati, Ohio before they arrived in Kansas. Henry and Francis first settled in Bloomington, Kansas where Henry started a steam sawmill. He was married to Frances in Wayne County, Indiana and had lived in Cincinnati, Ohio before they arrived in Kansas. Henry and Francis first settled in Bloomington, Kansas where Henry started a steam sawmill. An interesting fact is that Henry brought his new prefabricated home he bought in Cinncinati Ohio down with him when they move to Bloomington Kansas. He floated the home down the Mississippi River. Henry and Francis had six children before Francis died in 1859. Henry was an ardent abolitionist and was a member of the underground railroad during the civil war. Henry housed slaves and drove slaves to their next stop in Topeka. After the death of his first wife, Henry married for the second time in 1862 to his first wife's niece, Abigail Ann Mead, who was living with them along with his mother-in-law Abigail Jessop Smith. She became mother to Henry's six children and to six others born to their union. Henry and Aby's children are Fedore Pedro "Homer" Hiatt, Clyde Hiatt, Theron Genejah Hiatt, Orel Onida Hiatt, Effie Zirena Hiatt and Lena Leota Hiatt. Henry Hiatt pre-empted the farm on which he lived, the SE4 of section 2, Township 14, Range 17. He combined farming with operating a grist mill, using the old stone burrs which now serve as a marker for his grave. On May 9, 1863 he was appointed trustee for the town of Twin Mound and began to sell blocks to the citizens. He also helped establish education for the young people of the community by helping to purchase,for $25. a two acre tract of ground on which a one-room stone schoolhouse was built. Henry Hiatt at one time was postmaster, as he kept a store and his house was a stopping place for changing horses in the stage coach days: his home was also an inn or hotel for travelers. The stone school house is still standing. Henry Hiatt, or Father Hiatt as he was lovingly known as, was a great asset to a new community.
