Henry and his older brother Samuel moved their families from eastern Pennsylvania to Harrison County, Iowa. Samuel is known to have moved from Pennsylvania to Pickaway County, Ohio about 1830, then from Ohio to Harrison County about 1840. Henry moved from Pennsylvania to Noble County, Indiana around 1840, then on to Harrison County about 1852. A third brother, Samuel and Henry's eldest brother H. Jesse Knauss, also had moved to Ohio about the same time as Samuel, then moved to Louisa County, Iowa about 1850. There is one significant puzzle here. There is a Guy S. KNAUSS buried in Bethel Cemetery in Harrison County, and his birth and death are given as 1827 and 1828 -- and the tombstone says "son of H. J. & E.," which can only mean H. Jesse Knauss. But there is not reason to believe that Jesse was in this area at the time! I can only guess that the death date was mis-read, and that Guy survived to come out to Harrison County as a young man. Although his name is only known as "Henry J. Knauss," he probably was christened "John Henry Knauss," as this was a name that was used in many related families at the time.
