In 1967 they retired and moved to their home in Castalia. During this time, Henry worked as a carpenter. He is preceded in death by his parents, a son, Edwin, and a daughter-in-law, Virginia. Also preceding him in death are six grandchildren, Larry, Bobby, Patty, Wayne, Jean and Janice; and two brothers, Thomas and Clark Monroe. Surviving are his wife, Nettie; two sons, James Monroe and his wife Marjorie of West Union and Henry Monroe, Jr., his wife Lorraine of Castalia; five grandchildren, Roberta Monroe, Connie Rothmeyer, Barb Schuchman, Becky Hanson and Cindy Grimes; 12 great grandchildren; one great, great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held on Monday, March 15, at 11 a.m. at the Castalia United Methodist Church, the Rev. Ken Seney officiating. The soloist was Larry Johansen and the pianist was Florence Albright. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Pleasant View Cemetery.
