Burial was in Pleasant View cemetery. A. C. Monroe was born January 26, 1900, at Castalia, a son of the late Frank and Mathilda (Dowd) Monroe. He obtained an education by attending the Bloomfield township school near his home. On September 7, 1920, he was married to Miss Mari Land in the Methodist parsonage at Decorah. They established their home at Castalia where they farmed for a time before moving to Marquette where Mr. Monroe worked in the Milwaukee railroad shop. They returned to farming and lived near Elkader four years. They also lived at Froelich where Mr. Monroe farmed and hauled cream for two years before returning to the home place at Castalia. Mr. Monroe retired from active farming 12 years ago and during that time did mason and carpenter work. He is survived by his wife and ten children -- Alvin of Postville, Curtis of Calmar, Virgil of Ossian, Bernold and Bernita (Mrs. Glen Heins) of Luana, Forrest and Marlene (Mrs. Robert Schissel) of Monona, Carroll of San Antonio, Texas, Fielden of Castalia and Rose Marie (Mrs. Ben Hemesath) of Des Plaines, Illinois. He is also survived by 46 grandchildren, one great grandchild, one niece, five nephews and two brothers -- Thomas and Henry Monroe, both of Castalia. He was preceded in death by two grandchildren.
