Jan 12, 1946 - Carroll Times - Funeral services for Henry J Heider, president of the Heider Manufacturing company, who died of angina pectoris at his home 209 North Main Street yesterday morning, are to be at 9 o'clock Monday Morning at Ss. Peter and Paul's church the Rev. Father Lambert Schenkelberg will offer the requiem mass. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. The rosary will be prayed at 7:30 o'clock Sunday evening at the Olerich Funeral home, where the body is resting until the time of the rites. During the 40 years Mr Heider served as president of the Heider manufacturing company, he designed all the products manufactured, including the Heider tractor, and was granted numerous patents on his inventions and improvements. Mr. Heider, son of the late John and Emma Heider, was born May 5, 1879, on a farm near Troy Grove, LaSalle county, Illinois. His parents were natives of that county. In March 1883, he came to Carroll county with his parents, who settled on a farm two miles west of Halbur. Later the family moved to a farm 1/2 mile north of Templeton. He received his schooling at Roselle and Templeton. When he was 21 years old and still living on the farm, Mr Heider patented and started to manufacture four horse eveners and other farm implement specialties without any power machinery. He delivered his products to his trade in a wagon. In order, to take care of the increasing demand for Heider eveners, Mr. Heider and his brother, John C. Heider, formed a partnership in January, 1903, and opened a factory at Albert Lea, Minn. Owing to the growth of their business, they were obliged to secure larger factory facilities, and in order to be more centrally located for their trade, they moved their factory to Carroll in January, 1904, into the building now occupied by the H and H Fruit company. A year later, they bought the ground and erected the bullding now housing the Cavanaugh Motor company. In this location, they manufactured eveners, doubletrees, singletrees, neckyokes and ladders. In 1908 the manufacture of the Heider tractor was begun. The first unit of the company's present plant was built in l912 to take care of the expanding tractor business. Both plants were operated simultaneously for a period of seven years. In December, 1916, the tractor business was sold to the Rock Island Plow company, Rock Island, Illinois. For the next six years Mr. Heider established and managed the tractor division of that company, dividing his time between Rock Island and Carroll. Coaster wagons were added to the Heider Manufacturing company's line of production in December, 1918. The growth of this department, along with the company's other eetablished lines, necessitated Mr. Hoider's resignation from the Rock Island staff to devote full time, to the expanding business of the Heider Manufacturing company. Since that time the business has continued substantially along the same line, with emphasis shifting to the enlarging ladder soles in recent years. At present, the company's products are distributed through jobbers and dealers throughout the greater part of the United States. In 1905, the original co-partnership of the two brothers, John C. and Henry J., was changed into a corporation with Henry J. Heider, president; L.C. Klein, vice-president, and John C. Heider, secretary-treasurer. The two brothers held the same offices since that time, the only change being made in the vice-presidency, held by John J. Heider at present. The corporation is in its 41st year and is on its third charter. Mr. Heider was married to Miss Frances Elizabeth Schlichte of Templeton at Sacred Heart church in Templeton June 25, 1906. They were the parents of eight children, one of whom a son, Henry, died in May, 1918. Surviving with his wife are four daughters and three sons: Mrs. Eugene Vaatveit (Florence), Kiester, Minn.; Mrs. Leo Fitzpatrick (Edna), Carroll; Miss Irma Heider, Yakima, Wash.; Lester Heider, S.J., St. Mary's, Kan.; Paul Heider, Chicago; Miss Marie Heider, Kansas City, Mo.; and John J. Heider, Carroll. There are five grandchildren. He also leaves two brothers and three sisters: John C. Heider, Carroll; Mrs. W.B. Brown (Margaret), Primghar; Mrs. H.J. Walz (Mary), Vancouver, Wash.; Mrs, J.F. Maher (Frances), and Joseph A. Heider, Carroll. Mr. Heider was a member of SS. Peter and Paul's church and the Holy Name Society of the parish. Mr. Heider was always vitally interested in civic affairs and the upbuilding of Carroll. He served as technical advisor to different city departments, including the fire and water departments. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Heider was instrumental in helping organize the Carroll Country club. A charter member of the club and first chairman of the greens committee, he helped draw up the plans for the building layout and the course. Mr. Heider, whose illness dated back to July, 1945, had been bedfast at his home the last ten days. All of his children are expected here for the funeral services.
