He was a son of Daniel and Annie Hux Johnson, all of Horry County S.C. He was married to Miss Eliza A. Johnson, was born July 14, 1835, of Scotch-Irish parentage, and departed this life May 31, 1917, aged 81 years, 10 months and 17 days. He was a son of Daniel and Annie Hux Johnson, all of Horry County S.C. He was married to Miss Eliza A. Johnson about the year 1856, to whom were born 14 children, five of which: Caroline, Margaret, Sam, Nancy and Daniel preceded him to the spirit world; and nine Charley W., Andy M., Alva H., Tolitha, Bersheba Ray, Lewis S., Whiteford W., Elizabeth Merett, Nora Rogers, and George Cornelius survive him. He made a profession of religion about 61 years ago at Cool Spring Campground under the ministry of Rev. Ogburn, who preached from Rev. 3-18 : “I council thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire that thou mayest be rich and white raiment that thou mayest be clothed.” Penitents were called and Uncle Henry (as we all learned to call him) then a young man went forward for prayer while the first verse was being sung of the old hymn: “Woe to the men on earth who dwell, And dread not the Almighty’s frown: When God doth all His wrath reveal, And shower His judgment down.” Sinners expect those heavy showers, To meet you God prepare, For low the seventh angel pours His vile upon the air. Low from the seats the mountain tops, The mountains are not found, Transported far in to the deep, And in the ocean drowned. Who then can live and face the throne And face the judge severe. When Heaven and earth are fled and gone Oh, where wilt thou appear.” After he had been at the alter for some time the preacher asked any one present who was interested in the salvation of souls, to take the penitents and go out and pray with them. And Rev. Billie Cannon took Bro. Johnson out beside the Chinnes Swamp where was converted. He lived his religion until the day of his death. It was during the same meeting he was married to Eliza Johnson. He was stricken with paralysis several years ago from which he suffered much, but his suffering is over now. Bro. Johnson was a truly good man having lived a constant life for many long years, along with his good wife, of whom it is said she was as good a woman as he was a man. She preceded him to the spirit world by over 13 years, having parted on before Dec. 1903. He was funeralized from Psalms 37-37: “Mark the perfect man and behold the upright for the end of that man is peace,” and his earthly remains were laid to rest in the old Johnson graveyard at Gethsemene Baptist Church.
